Matthews Snap-A-Part Reviews

Painful to assemble.

It does the job being a simple frame but very inefficiently. Its heavy and pieces are a hassle to put together. My thumbs ache after building and breaking down. Wish i would of returned it in the beginning but instead it sits in the van without use.:(

Built Well, Solid Gear

This was a perfect solution for my 6x6 silk, duvatene and lame. It's best to number connections for easy build, especially by freelance assistants not familiar with set up. It's also good idea to have 2 c-stands since it has two extensions to lock it down. One thing I couldn't understand is connectors near the extension plugs on the frame don't click and lock like all the other sections, the frame can slide out at these 2 points.

Pretty good frame

I've rented 6x6 frames several times, and I decided to buy one so I could use it on more projects that wouldn't normally justify renting. The frames I've rented have usually had the separate ears, which I prefer over this one, although the 5/8 pin makes it very easy to t-bone one section of frame on a c-stand and simply hang your diffusion, rather than set up the entire frame. The snap-apart aspect of this frame is really nice over the rental, since it can be stored and transported more easily. However, as others have noted, it is very difficult to get the frame together the first time, and it did seem that it would only go together one way. I even used a rubber mallet to get the last piece to seat completely and I used it again to disassemble it. I'm hoping it breaks in over time. Once I got it together, I marked each joint with colored tape, as someone else suggested. Seems like a robust frame that will do the job. Just a bit of a hassle to set up initially.

Arrived warped

I rent Matthews 6x6's all the time so I figured I'd just go ahead and buy one. This one arrived warped so it is very very hard to construct the frame and pull the frame apart once it is constructed (sticks extremely badly). I'm also not sure why the grommet posts are on this frame because none of the Matthews 6x6 grommets align with these posts, making them completely useless. I also ordered three grids/scrims over a month ago and they have not been drop shipped by Matthews yet. Very frustrating company to deal with.

I use this to bounce light into my house for video and photos. I also use it to control light whether it be indoors or out. It's great to place it in front of super bright window, does a good job. It's built strong enough to withstand wind which is pretty sturdy. I noticed just like the other reviews that it's a little stiff the first time putting it together. I'm sure it will become easier to take apart after a few times. I also agree that it's a good idea to figure out the way it goes together and label it. After much deliberation I chose to go with this frame. I had a number of other quick setup frame systems but I found them to not be sturdy enough for the long run. This frame has it's disadvantages tho, it's heavy, takes a long time to setup and it's pretty big but it's cheap and its strong. That's why I chose it. I'm also thinking of adding another more sturdy smaller panel for my street shoots but for my home and studio this works great. This company also has some really cool quick snap apart frame systems, if this gets enough use and I ever upgrade, I'm definitely going that route.

I'm very happy with this Matthews 6'x6' frame. Assembly is actually very easy, and once assembled the frame is very strong. The fact you can collapse it into smaller pieces is a bonus, in case you are traveling in a smaller vehicle. Price is also pretty decent for such a nicely made product.

it does the job but....

Its heavy and inserts are difficult to put together/breakdown. Your thumb/finger will be sore trying to release, i usually will use my car key to press in the release buttons. i should have returned it when i received it but i was desperate.

Parts are very difficult to put together - the tension is way to high. When assembled, the whole thing wobbles around. Had to try for 15 minutes to pull them apart when we finished shooting. Some parts came with rust on the connectors. 340 Dollars for a few metal parts that don't fit well is a bit of a bummer, in my eyes.
