Matthews Hollywood Low Boy Combo Double Riser Reviews
Not a standard Junior Receiver
This stand's receiver is about 5mm too shallow and about 4mm too proud. A standard junior pin will not seat deep enough for its top to be safely inside the receiver, and even if it were it would be loose inside the receiver. Apparently Matthews definition of a Junior Receiver/Pin is different from everyone else's. Be warned.
Coolest new stand in my kit
I needed a new combo stand for my recently acquired Aputure 1200X. What I ended up with was one of the coolest stands I could have imagined. It’s very sturdy, compact when folded up, utilizes a small foot print when open, and it can handle a serious payload. This is the perfect stand for on-location work. While it is a heavy little bugger, it makes up for it in its space saving ability. I work primarily in houses, kitchens and businesses, so the height of this is just right for indoor work. Outside it is more limited for sure. Direct lighting of higher windows may be tricky. I’d opt for a more traditional combo stand if you’re using it for those applications. Otherwise this is such a cool stand. As far as using it with the 1200X, it’s almost as if they were made for each other. There’s just enough space at the base to mount the ballast which acts as a weight to the bottom of the stand. You can’t use the quick release however, there’s just no room to get the right angle to attach the ballast to the locking mechanism, so you have to mount the clamp onto the ballast and then tighten it to the stand. Otherwise it is just perfect.
