Do you think this will grip tightly to 3/4" black pipe, or too big?
I'd likely use a Cardellini clamp to secure a light to a 3/4" OD black iron pipe. If the head is small like a ARRI 150 or 300, a Lowell clamp would work. If all you have is a standard baby pipeclamp and you need it to bite a smallish pipe you can place a small hardwood block between the pipe and the bolt, and then tighten your bolt. For this to work safely the pipe must settle into one of the corners of the clamp. Be sure to use a wire safety to connect the pipe to the yoke of the instrument in case the bite fails.

I want to hang my Paul C Buff Einstein lights from the ceiling from mounted pipes. Will this do the job?
Yes, a Baby Pipe Clamp will do the job, but we recommend you consider the Baby Grid Clamp as a tool-less option. Both are great support options, but the Baby Grid Clamp is a bit more user friendly.

question
I plan to secure lights to the metal roof truss in the studio. Is this clamp appropriate for this application?
I have an upside down T style roof truss and these clamps work very well and are also secure for hanging heaving lighting. You just want to make sure the bolt is tight against the truss and locked in, and it will work like a charm.

question
we are building the pipe grid now but i need to give the pipe dimensions to the architects....what size pipe is best?
We used 2 aluminum pipe, which has served quite well. The pipe wall is thick, at least 1/4 , probably 3/8 , to resist deformation from tightening the clamp. The outside surface is not smooth, but has longitudinal ridges, which helps prevent slippage. A local machine shop supplied the pipe and built 4 grids for us.
