Microphone Madness MM-BSM-8 Overview

The MM-BSM-8 In-Ear Binaural Stereo Microphones from Microphone Madness are binaural in-ear stereo microphones that terminate with a 1/8" stereo mini-jack connector. They can be used to capture audio that replicates human hearing with authentic, true-to-life stereo imagery for audio recorders supplying a bias voltage of between 1.5 to 10 VDC (also known as plug-in power). In addition, the microphones do not block your hearing ability.

These microphones are designed to be worn like headphones to achieve the most accurate stereo placement possible and offer a naturally crisp sound, providing deep bass, smooth mid-range, and clean high-frequencies for detailed recordings. The MM-BSM-8 In-Ear Binaural Stereo Microphones are compatible with (but not limited to) the following recorders: Edirol R9, Kodak Zi8 HD pocket video camera, Olympus DS-40, Olympus LS-10, Tascam DR-01, Tascam DR-03, Tascam DR-07, Yamaha CX, Zoom H1, Zoom H2, and Zoom H4N.

Stereo In-Ear Design
The binaural design of the microphones allows both capsules to mount in-ear to recreate the stereo perspective achieved by human hearing.
Single 1/8" (3.5mm) Output
Both elements feature shielded cables and terminate to a single stereo 1/8" output connector. The connector is compatible with microphone inputs that supply a bias voltage of 1.5 to 10 VDC (also known as plug-in power).
Compatible Recorders
The mic is compatible with the Edirol R9, Kodak Zi8 HD pocket video camera, Olympus DS-40, Olympus LS-10, Tascam DR-01, Tascam DR-03, Tascam DR-07, Yamaha CX, Zoom H1, Zoom H2 and Zoom H4N and many more recorders with mini-jack mic inputs offering plug-in power.

Microphone Madness MM-BSM-8 Reviews

Noisy and not full range

I tried multiple preamps and these have such a low gain that when you raise the preamp, you get a TON of noise. on top of that, the frequency spectrum is anything but flat. All bass is lost.

Pristine Solution for Ambient Recording

Very high quality microphones that are durable and fit securely. They produce sound recordingd that are far better than those from the built in microphones on digital audio recorders.

question

How much handling noise (breathing, swallowing, wind, etc) is there with these? Also, what kind of gain boost do they require in a pre-amp, and how noisy do they get?
Asked by: Anonymous
They pick up pretty much anything you can hear with your own ears. So, if you can hear the wind, it will come up in the recording. Likewise with mouth noises, especially in otherwise quiet environments.I use them with a Tascam DR-05 field recorder, with the mic power set to on, and the recording level at 25, which does pick up a lot of handling noise, like clothes rustling, etc. (but that's what I am actually trying to capture with these).

question

At which level perceptuall these mikes affect ones hearing ability?
Asked by: Artak
Microphone Madness designed the BSM-8 in a way that doesn't affect one's hearing (unless it's literally being shoved down the ear canal). The BSM-8 ear tips are made of a soft silicone like material and can be worn for hours at a time.

question

I'd like to use these for frequency response measurements. Can you provide a calibration file for the binaural elements?
Asked by: Jason G.
I use these for frequency response measurements and they work fantastically well without any calibration file. I was mostly worried about imbalance between the channels but I did my best to measure the differences between the two and the tolerances were tight enough not to make any impact to my measurements.
