Canon EW-73B overview

  • 1Description

The Canon EW-73B Lens Hood is designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Canon EW-73B reviews

EW-73B Lens Hood is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 297.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Short lens hood for long range zoom This lens hood works just like all the other similar hoods from Canon: Attach it to lens, turn 1/4 of a revolution and there it is. It protects the lens front from stray sunrays, rain, snow, dust and some violence. You can also store it backwards on the lens, in which case it doesn't add anything to the length of the lens, but still to the diameter, of course. The drawback with this one is that it's rather small. Compared to the significantly larger EW-83J for the EF-S 17-55 mm f/2.8 IS USM, which has the same widest angle, it seems this could have been a bit longer, even if it has a smaller diameter. No, it's not included with the lens, so you have to buy it separately.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality Product I use this product with my Canon 18-135 IS lens. It's nice to have a layer of protection to catch dust that might otherwise get in the lens (it's got a felt interior coating) and if I were to drop the lens (I'd rather bust a lens hood than a lens). It's also nice to have protection against lens flare in direct sunlight. I used it in the Carribean and only had one or 2 pictures with any sort of flare in direct sunlight. It's a bit bigger than I expected from pictures, but it's certainly the proper size for the lens. I haven't had the product long enough to speak about durability but it seems like it will be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Use with built-in flash can cause shadow I recently bought this hood for an 18-135mm lens. The hood produced a shadow (looks like a normal curve!) in the lower third center of the frame when I used the built-in flash on my canon rebel t1i (lens was at 22mm). No shadow when used with the 430EX flash. Outdoors the hood did fine at both wide and telescopic shots with no vignetting. I have found this hood is easier to work with filters than the Canon ET-60 hood due to the smaller length of the east/west tabs (The ET-60 is basically a 2 1/8 snout all the way around whereas this hood is 1 1/2 north/south and 1/2 east/west). This hood also has a micro-fuzz lining that reduces glare (the ET-60 is smooth on the inside). Other than the built-in flash shadow, I'm happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition to an already great lens Bought this lens hood after vacationing in Hawaii with my 17-85mm WITHOUT one. Photos came out great, but midday sun flare is evident around the corners on outdoor shots. I immediately got the lens hood, and all my succeeding photos are now coming out clean properly lighted, even in unfavorable midday outdoor lighting. The petal shape is much more favorable than the barrel-shaped lens hoods as it gives better access to the cap. I have a 70-200mm f/4L with a barrel-shaped hood, and removing and replacing the lens cap gets to be very inconvenient; so the petal shape is a definite plus. Lastly, it gives your lens extra protection from bumps and bangs that are naturally part of a photographer's life on the run.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from You know, It's a Lens Hood This is a nice lens hood. A little more expensive than the Vello brand version, but works just the same. I bought this for my 18-135mm STM Canon lens and works great. I love that it twists on and off and is reversible, as apposed to the clip on kind. My only issue is when my lens is is at the 18mm setting I can see the outer edges of this hood so I always have to be slightly zoomed in. I know this fits other lenses that may not have this problem, so overall a good lens hood. It does what it does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great accessory! The EW-73B is the perfect companion for the Canon 18-135mm lens. It is sturdy and practical: the cap of the lens can be put on or taken out easily when the hood is on the lens and the hood can be inverted for travelling, if needed. Canon does not include a hood with its mainstream lenses... In my opinion, it is worth it to pay some extra money to buy a hood as it helps to protect the lens. It's much cheaper to replace a hood than a lens if the camera is dropped or knocked! And of course, the hood does a good job blocking the glare from the sun. I would definitely recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gets the Job Done. I use my lens hood on my Canon 30D and it is just enough to prevent lens flare. It is short enough that it doesn't get clunky in my camera gag. It also stays on the lens very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Genuine Canon Quality I've been pleased with other non-Canon brands of lens hoods, which are always less expensive than the Canon brand, but I'm happy to spend the extra money for a genuine Canon hood if there is a compelling reason. In this case, the EW-73B comes with a felt interior finish that reduces reflected light far more than the standard ridged or matte finish of other brands. Of course, the lens hood fits perfectly on my Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. Even more, while you have to pay for it, it's nice having that little extra confidence you get having a genuine Canon product.
