Chimera Quick Release Speed Ring for Profoto Overview

This Chimera Quick Release Speed Ring allows mounting of Chimera, or almost any other brand rectangular softbox to the Profoto Series of flash heads.

The Quick Release Series releases the tension of the wands in the frame of your softbox, allowing it to collapse easily for breakdown, or for moving on quickly to the next setup without disassembling the box.

Chimera Quick Release Speed Ring for Profoto Reviews

Great Product, til it (inevitably) isn't

Love these speedrings because the sliding inner ring lets me rotate my strip softboxes freely when I'm working fast, instead of having to go to the head, loosen the ring, spin it, and retighten the ring. For that reason I only use these on set. My significant gripe is the little washers that hold the ring on are tiny and inevitably fail catastrophically. I've gotten extra washers from Chimera and fixed mine several times. But I put on a lot of wear on these and I can't afford to have one go out when I'm shooting, so I've taken to carrying a spare (annoying!). I've looked at modifying some larger washers or milling little replacement parts that will do the job better, but haven't gotten around to it yet. If you have, please contact me. Save this one critical flaw it's a terrific speedring. If you don't need that extra on-the-fly spinning functionality though, you can save a couple bucks with a static one and never have a softbox of Damocles dangling over your subject.

Wasn't impressed

I'm an old school Chimera user since the mid 80s. I tried this to see if I was missing something. It ended up taking more time to use and was much harder to deal with. I returned it and got the regular ring http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/13811-REG.

question

How difficult it is to work on the knobs that release tension? I am afraid to get one and find out I won't be able to release the tension. Can you easily change to another box in the field? Thank you all for your reply to a previous question, especially for the comment on the 1x4 box since I was planning on using with that.

It is one of the easiest speedrings to use. It is a quick release design. So in most cases is about the fastest to work with. Note it will not work with all softboxes.

The Profoto OFC A10 has a different size and design comparing to B10X, the Chimera Quick Release Speed Ring for Profoto will not fit the Profoto OFC A10 nor A2.

question

Could someone please provide me with the diameter (in millimeters) of the pole holes of this speedring?I found out today that my Profoto RFi Speedring for Profoto Flash Heads won't accept my Chimera Shallow Super Pro Plus Medium Softbox (36 x48 ) because the diameter of the softbox's poles are too large for the RFi speedring holes.
Asked by: Chris
As per Chimera, the diameter of the rod points on this speed ring is 5/8 .
