It allows mounting of the Chimera (or other brand) Octagonal shaped light banks to a light fixture that accepts 6.5" diameter accessories.

Odd, you get use to purchasing so many things where the quality is so-so - this Chimera Speed Ring is EXCELLENT - yes, it costs more than others but since when does price trump all? I will be dealing with Chimera far more often for both the speed rings and the softboxes.
