ZEISS Biogon T* 25mm f/2.8 ZM Overview

Ideally suited for landscape and architectural photography, the black Biogon T* 25mm f/2.8 ZM from ZEISS is a versatile wide-angle prime designed for M-mount rangefinder cameras. Its 82° angle of view is complemented by a Biogon optical concept, which nearly eliminates distortion for well-corrected, accurate rendering. A T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for greater color accuracy and contrast in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, the lens's manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 1.6' away.

Biogon optical concept benefits the wide-angle focal length by helping to virtually eliminate distortion for clean, realistic rendering.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
Manual focus design enables a minimum focusing distance of 1.6'.

ZEISS Biogon T* 25mm f/2.8 ZM Reviews

Excellent on my M11

I owned a new copy of this lens when I used it on a Leica ME (M9 variation) . It rendered beautifully and regretted selling it when I sold my ME to pursue the Leica Q and Leica SL systems. Early in 2026, I again purchased a Leica rangefinder, the M11 with 50mm and 35 mm lenses. Missing that 24/25 perspective, but knowing that the newer Leica M CMOS sensors did not produce images like the older CCD sensor on my ME, I took the chance and purchased a new Zeiss 25mm Biogen from B&H. With their very consumer-friendly return policy, I figured I would take the chance. I'm extremely pleased with this classic Zeiss lens. It's creating beautiful images with the M11. Of course, it has all the characteristics of Zeiss glass (not to everyone's liking!) and not that of Leica glass, but I love it all the same. It's a keeper.

Paired with a Leica CL

I will forego any overly technical discussions on optical characteristics other than to say 'this lens is extraordinarily sharp' and I bought it for immediate use with the APS-C Leica CL (~38mm equiv) and in anticipation of later use as full frame on some 'future purchase'. So, at best, discussions about quality would only apply to the center of the lens coverage anyways. I would like to talk about what a magical pairing this is with the Leica CL (via the M adapter L). This lens made a super camera better.  Manual aperture gives live depth of field experience in the (electronic) viewfinder. So now the importance of aperture finds your attention. This leaves the camera electronics to balance ISO and shutter speed - which really can more safely be relegated to exposure system program rules and logic. Manual focus slows me down, and then adjusting aperture for depth of field causes me to spend a moment more working the shot. This, is actually a GOOD thing. I think the default usage pattern of the all-auto L mount lenses tend to help one overlook these details. I concede that this is an arguable point; I have a number of the Leica L mount lenses and I have nothing bad to report on them. On the other hand, i strongly prefer the manual usage pattern - it has made me a more meditative photographer. One additional benefit of the manual design is that my battery now lasts forever. I think the size and weight compliment the CL very well - as though they were *intended* for this purpose. This probably has more to do with the size similarity and configuration of the M cameras to the CL. It has a natural feel, and the default manual (focus) settings set the right function wheel to be focus magnification - perfect. The CL paired with this lens (and the M adapter L) gives you a really sweet camera with an EVF (better than a rangefinder design) and fraction of the price of a M or SL2. And... this lens can be used on either of those cameras when you 'move up' to a full frame sensor. The preference of a rangefinder over seeing exactly what the sensor sees is a bit confusing to me - such is my bias. I do have one 'complaint' in that I genuinely believe there is a flaw in the lens cap. I lost mine on the first outing, and then nearly lost another Zeiss lens cap of the same design on another trip. Even though i do not have a history of losing lens caps, this could be chance events, but is starting to look like a design issue.
