Can this be used in "passive" mode without phantom power?
No, the Radial Engineering J48 Phantom Powered Active Direct Box cannot be used as a passive direct box. The circuitry used for active and passive direct boxes is different. The passive version is the Radial Engineering JDI Mk3 Direct Box (B&H # RAJDI).
