Mola Setti Overview

The patented design of the Mola Setti Soft Lite Reflector captures and focuses light with maximum efficiency. It is shaped to intercept all paths of light, no matter which direction they leave the flash tube, and redirects them toward the subject. This is a big improvement on most square boxlights which can only focus a portion of the light available.

This is the Setti Soft Lite 28" model with a white reflective surface. Its size is perfect for portraits and mounts to your strobe head via your Chimera, Photoflex, or other brand speed ring, available separately.

The Setti's deep narrow profile increases contrast and delivers a directional quality which is perfect for black and white as well as color images which require a noticeably distinct edge.
This reflector requires the adapter plate from your Chimera, Photoflex, or other brand of speed ring, to fit your light fixture.

Mola Setti Reviews

One of the most impressive lights

setti is my favorite modifier. I sometimes use it for food photography as well as portraits. Highlights can be noticeable if not treated somewhat in post.... I also use it for group photos of over 100 people, as it is a little deeper and can cast farther more efficiently. The setti seems to emit light with about the same color cast as the Chimera Super Pro X Plus Lightbank silver inside, (my measurements showed the same color temperature and a 2 point difference in tint). I think the Super Pro X Plus, which also covers the inner defuse curtain without gaps, is also characterized by its smooth highlights, but the difference between this and setti is also interesting and could be mixed interestingly depending on how it is used. It was a delight for me. I use it with Opal Defusion and metal black grid. I still feel safer using the junior stand, including when using the boom. I also purchased an additional mesh diffuser and noticed that I think I originally received a mesh diffuser with it, not a nylon diffuser.

So got mine few days ago and just got speed ring today,bh send me mola with missing screws so I can’t even assemble dish now,so disappointing

See any errors on this page?

I found a Setti cheap (Dish, Profoto Speedring, ...

I found a Setti cheap (Dish, Profoto Speedring, and Diffusion Sock). So I'll still need a grid, and the Opal Diffuser. But just wondering... This one seems to have kind of a "creamy" white finish. I imagine it will produce a warmer color temp. Is that normal for a Setti or has this been painted/modified/refurbished? And also, 20 or 40 degree grid? And White, or Black?
Asked by: Ben
Back in January I purchased the entire line of Mola soft lights. I would have to say that the Demi and Setti are two favorites. First its hard to know about the interior color of the dish being it could be just old and age discolored or just stored badly between uses. If it turns out to be a bit too warm for your liking I think I would opt for a CC gel to knock it back some. With regard to grids? I prefer the black 20,.....while some say the white gives a nice soft edge which I think is contrary to using a grid to start with.....it also knocks back the contrast which I don't like one bit. {looks odd to me} Also, don't lose any sleep over the Opal diffuser disc. I have several and have yet to use them on any of my dishes. I like them with the perforated disc alone. I think once you get set up with this dish you'll love it as much as all Mola users do. They have a completely unique look and feel to them. Oh, and a tip for storage? Put them back in their plastic shipping bag and store on their face, not on their sides.

question

How would I set this with the Cheetah-Speed-Pro-Bracket-MKI? What would I need? to mount it?
Asked by: Sean
Totally agree with other answer. I would not recommend using a speed light with this. Invest in a strobe that has 360 light direction such as Profoto or Einstein.

question

If you has to choose between a Mola Setti or a Mola Demi for 3/4 portraits, which one would it be?
Asked by: Tom
When purchasing the Mola Setti beauty dish, my original intention was to use it on locations as I had seen other fashion photographers do. I debated between the Demi and the Setti for awhile and finally decided to go with the larger dish as I felt this would give me more versatility. I felt it would allow me to light single portrait as well as couples or siblings. When it arrived I was actually surprised at how large and heavy it was. This is perfect for in studio use but I found was impractical to take with me on location. I just found it to be too cumbersome to move around outdoors as I do not always shoot with an assistant. I have often thought it would have been nice to have purchased the smaller one which I think would be more portable and versatile for my needs. I think in the end it depends on what you will be using it for. If only used in studio I would go with the Setti. If you'd like to take it indoors and outdoors without an assistant I would consider the Demi.

question

Have you traveled on a plane with it? what are the actual measurements with the adapter? 28x ...? if you have flown with it, have you paid extra to carry it?
Asked by: Andres C.
I am a fashion photographer and have flown with this dish, since it can be hard to rent locally in many places. It is big and heavy and needs to be boomed out and sandbagged carefully, but the light is amazing and I have used it for many editorial projects. I have the Mola case, which was extremely expensive, but it is the only option for air travel and even around town you need it if you run the PAD and opal glass stacked, as I do. I have never paid extra baggage - a little flirtation goes a long way in this world!

question

Has anyone bought a cheap case for the Setti? Links?
Asked by: Sean
Check your local music store as they have some soft drum cases that should work well.

question

Mola setti How much weight?
Asked by: CHOI J.
The Setti is heavy, period. It attaches to the stand and the light hangs off the back freely. I use with an Einstein and works very well. Your meter will not read in front as the Setti is probably light steel, but will not bend or ding. To bring on location it is some work. That said, the light is just beautiful. It will give you harder shadows and a crisp look for fabrics and hair, but the skin is smooth and forgiving like a BD. I have used for tight shots but it shines when using as a key light 15-20 feet back. Worth the investment. I own 3 Molas.

question

Does it comes with Opal Diffusion Glass ?
Asked by: Anonymous
No it doesn't come included you have to purchase the opal glass separate along with the opal glass stabilizing ring. Also you will need to purchase the speed ring attachment that works with your lighting equipment. Hope this helps. It's an awesome light diffuser!! Enjoy:)

question

I own an elinchrom Deep Octa 100cm And Im thinking a lot about buying this Setti for my fashion work which often involves full length shots. What kind of distance is required for good full length coverage when using this and does a second strobe lower down need to be used to get the legs exposed properly? Also how do you think it compares to the deep octa will I see a major d8fference?
Asked by: Ferhan
Ferhan: The difference between the deep Octa and the Setti white interior are as follows. The Octa is 39 in and the Setti is 28 in, so it is 30% smaller. The Octa however is quite different in that the Octa is 26 inches deep and the Setti is 13 in deep. The Octa is much deeper and therefore has less coverage than the Setti at the same distance. The Setti's white interior will give greater spread as the Octa is a bright silver making it more directional. The light quality from these sources is very different. The Setti is contrasty, but the Octa is more so. The Setti will give you a warmer quality of light whereas the Octa will be much cooler in colour temperature(silver vs white). Shooting distance with the Setti for F/L would be 7-8 feet. This will depend on how even or flat you like your light. You may want to add a light below or something broad behind to act as fill. These are all personal preferences is lighting style. I think the Setti has great contrast with a really nice fall off. But as I've said they are very different in light quality. I hope this helps!
