Kowa TSE-Z9B Reviews

My dad had gifted me a Kowa spotting scope he used to use for hunting. I live near Yellowstone National Park and needed longer range for wildlife viewing. This is perfect. It's clear even at 60x.

Performance Lacking at Higher Magnification

I recently purchased Kowas TSN-664M spotting scope with the intention of upgrading from an old 50mm scope that I have owned since the 1980s. After reading a number of positive reviews about the TE-9Z 20-60x zoom eyepiece, I figured this would be a good option on my new Kowa. I realize that zoom lenses will always involve optical compromises in order to provide variable focal lengths, and as an architectural photographer I strongly prefer fixed focal length (prime) lenses for this reason.  Yet I like the idea of having some flexibility and decided to try the zoom anyway. Mainly, I tested the eyepiece on a bird feeder approximately 30 feet from my house in bright mid-day sunlight, using a tripod and with the scope sunshade extended. The subject was not backlit. At 20 to 30mm, I felt the image quality and clarity were good, although the FOV (field of view) seemed to be fairly restrictive. I tried viewing with and without my eyeglasses, while adjusting the rotating eyecups accordingly. At anything over 30mm +, image quality degraded noticeably and became somewhat darker. Clarity seemed to soften and contrast was reduced overall; not just at the image edges, but throughout the entire image circle.  Judging from all the positive reviews, I expect many users are not as particular about image quality, and apparently find this eyepiece to be sufficient.  However, I was not impressed—and after carefully checking/testing over the next couple of days, ultimately returned it for the 30x wide version. Things are looking better already.

Would this fit a Brunton Eterna 80mm spotting scope?
Asked by: Yvette
It is difficult to say since B&H does not carry the Brunton Stema line of spotting scopes. The Kowa TE-9Z 20-60x Zoom Spotting Scope Eyepiece BH #KOEP2060X66Q • MFR #TE-9Z has a bayonet mount specific with Kowa scopes.
