Nikon HN-3 overview

  • 1Description

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Nikon HN-3 reviews

HN-3 Lens Hood is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fits like a glove! I'm a stickler for wanting every component that comes with a lens, so when the smaller lenses ship without hoods, I often buy them afterwards. This lens hood fits on the 35mm f/2.0 AF-D lens that I purchased very well. It's metallic and screws in. Just be careful while attaching it, not to move too hastily as you may risk scratching the lens with the metal. Otherwise, it does its job very well and I use it all the time with my lens. It's especially useful on lightly raining days, I feel the lens has some added protection.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works, on 35F2 and 50F1.8 Works, just like a lens hood should. Though I don't use the 50F1.8 much, the lens hood also fits it. I do like this hood better on the 50F1.8 than the rubber collapsable hood I've had since the 90's. The hn-3 hood is metal, and it mounts to the 50f1.8 better than the plastic-threaded rubber hood. (I don't know if the rubber hood I have is a Nikon product). Only issue I have with the HN-3 is that it is a screw-in lens hood, which is inconvenient to use with lens caps. (Perhaps you can put a large cap over the entire hood, rather than over just the lens itself?)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable Hood Using this on my Nikon AIS 35mm 1.4, working out well

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very reliable I have this hood attached to my 35mm D f/2 lens. I don't plan to take it off. I don't use or need a lens cap for this lens. The hood not only acts as an effective guard against flare, it provides plenty of protection when the lens is in my camera bag. I wish that Nikon offered this hood as standard equipment WITH the lens, but such is the company's way with a number of the D lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job well This is the prescribed hood for the Nikon 35mm moderate wide angle lens. To mount the hood onto the lens it helps to hold the lens threads-up and level, then seat the hood and turn it slowly until the threads mesh. Rigid hoods provide more protection for a lens than rubber ones. This hood is fairly slim, but has enough width to provide adequate protection from accidental knocks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid lens shade adds protection I use solid screw-in lens shades, whenever available, on all lenses mostly for added protection of the front element. The HN-3 is perfect when using a 24mm f2.8 on any DX format DSLR (D70s & D7000). The HN-1 must be used when the 24mm is mounted on a film camera. Care should be used when threading shade in place so it doesn't contact the lens element.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy a Nikon hood again The product is used on a 35mm Nikkor lens. It properly blocks out unwanted light. It is a precision manufactured part, as are all of Nikon's products. The next hood will definately be a Nikon as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Hood! I've had a lot of lens flare with my 50mm prime lens until I started using this hood. Great purchase. It's very durable (it's metal).
