It is primarily used to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of it. The original Nikon HN-3 lens hood has concentric grooves machined or stamped in the inner surface. These grooves reduce bounced light a little better than the smooth, dull black inner surface of the Vello HN-3 hood. If Vello added grooves I'd give five stars. The HN-3 hood is my go to hood for so many lenses, 35/2.0 AIS, 50/1.8 AIS, AF-D 28-70/3.5-4.5, etc. The classic Tupperware tumbler caps recommended by the Nikon School so many years ago fit perfectly.

Attached the hood to my 18-55mm Nikon kit lens and it works well. No vignetting even at the widest (18mm) focal length setting. Also protects the front element against bumps aside from stray light.

No, the HN-3 Dedicated Lens Hood would not accept a lens cap. The hood would need to be removed in order to place the lens cap onto the front of your lens.

The Vello HN-3 Dedicated Lens Hood (52mm Screw-On) will physically mount to the Kodak PIXPRO AZ528 Digital Camera (Black) (BH# KOAZ528BK); however, it will not have enough coverage when the lens is at its longer telephoto settings, and it may even vignette when the lens is set to the wider focal length settings.

The HN-3 will attach to the 50/1.2, but it is the designated hood for the 35/1.4 & 35/2. Nikon lists proper hoods for the 50/1.2 as either the HS-12 or the HR-2.

HiThe reasonably priced Vello HN-3 is a 52 mm size and screws into the thread nicely on the 35 mm f1.8 DX Nikon lens. It's slightly more shallow and wide that the lenshood that comes with the 35 mm DX because the DX lens is equivalent to a normal 50 mm lens on an FX/35 mm/full-frame camera. The HN-3 is actually make for a 35 mm-wide angle lens on a full-frame camera. I personally like a slightly shallow and wide lenshood. But it you want the exact lenshood for your 35 1.8 DX lens, you should look for the Nikon or Vello model HB-46. It's small and light and also a very nice lens-shade.

Hi Marc. I'm not sure. I've used it on an older nikkor 24mm 2.8 on a nikon full frame sensor. A wider focal length than your 35. I don't get any vignetting. I got it primarily to help reduce flaring in bright conditions. It works as well as can be expected. It's metal, so it has a sturdy feel. I am happy with this product. I believe that it should work well with your application. Worst case scenario B & H return policy is top notch.
