Pentax 70531 overview

  • 1Description

Featuring premium optical components, a wide 60° field of a view, and generous 18mm eye relief for comfortable glassing, the SMC XF 8.5mm Eyepiece is designed for use with Pentax 100mm, 80mm and 65mm spotting scopes. This 8.5mm focal length eyepiece yields 74x magnification with PF-100ED, 61x with PF-80EDA, 59x with PF-80ED, 57x with PR-80EDA, 44x with PR-65EDA, and 46x with PF-65EDA II. Extra-low dispersion lanthanum glass elements provide a balanced image with minimal aberrations, while fully multi-coated air-to-glass surfaces and partially coated laminated surfaces avoid reflection for optimal light transmission. A light-shielding diaphragm further reduces internal reflections for a bright, high-contrast image.

The eyepiece is constructed to Japanese Industrial Standard Class 4 for water-resistance. It is not to be used underwater, but will easily withstand light rain or dew. Its diameter is the American standard of 1.25", so it can be used in other spotting scopes or telescopes, and it offers a 30.5mm adapter mounting thread under the removable eyecup.

    Pentax 70531 reviews

SMC XF 8.5mm Eyepiece (1.25") is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pentax XF8.5mm I was very keen to try out this eyepiece after reading quite a bit about it. I have not had much time to do any comprehensive testing .....here are my initial thoughts: Tested in Takahashi FS60CB F5.9 at 355mm f/l and Takahashi TSA120 F7.5 at 900mm f/l on the Great Nebula in Orion (Messier 42) and compared with the beautiful Vixen Lanthanum LVW 8mm, the Pentax is very sharp and shows great contrast. The sharpness extends across the field of view with almost no lateral colour visible in either Takahashi scope. The star images were a little tighter in the Pentax than the Vixen. The XF8.5 is a very well made, compact eyepiece.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use eyepiece I purchased a pair of these to use with a Baader binoviewer and a small SCT scope with a 0.63 FL reducer (to reduce magnification and widen the field). Their eye relief and turn to raise eyecup are both beneficial. In comparing them to a pair of simiar focal length orthoscopic eyepieces, they seem to not have quite the brightness or contrast, but have a wider field of view and obviously much longer eye relief. Overall, I am pleased with them, but wish that Pentax had a few more focal lengths in this range to chose from than this and the 12mm. If you have not tried using binoviewers, I would encourage you to do so. To me, they are much more enjoyable to use for low to medium magnification on planets, binaries and clusters than a monocular.
