Sigma 500mm f/4.5 overview

  • 1Description

A truly long-reaching lens designed for Canon EF-mount cameras, the 500mm f/4.5 EX DG APO HSM from Sigma is a super telephoto characterized by its relatively fast maximum aperture and apochromatic optical design. Employing a pair of Extraordinary Low Dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing, this lens produces notable clarity and color fidelity throughout the aperture range. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to realize greater contrast when working in backlit or difficult lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical attributes, this lens also sports an internal focusing design, along with a Hyper Sonic Motor, to deliver fast and quiet autofocus performance, and a manual focus clutch allows for quick switching between auto and manual focusing positions. Benefitting handling and use, a rotating tripod collar is featured for increased stability and easier switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations. Additionally, this lens accepts 46mm drop-in style filters via the included holder, and both UV and circular polarizer filters are included.

Prime super telephoto 500mm f/4.5 lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, and can also be used on APS-C models where it provides an 800mm equivalent focal length.
Sporting an apochromatic design, two Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) glass elements are used to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the aperture range in order to produce greater clarity and color fidelity.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to minimize ghosting and flare when working in strong lighting conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance.
Internal focusing design limits the overall length of the lens during operation for more intuitive, controlled handling as well as faster performance.
A manual focus clutch lets you slide the focusing ring back or forth to quickly switch between manual and autofocus modes.
Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
A fixed, rotating tripod collar offers increased stability when working from a tripod as well as intuitive switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.
A rear drop-in slot enables the use of 46mm drop-in filters via the included filter holder, and both UV and circular polarizer filters are included.
Compatible with optional APO Tele Converters to further extend the reach of this super telephoto lens.

    Sigma 500mm f/4.5 reviews

500mm f/4.5 EX DG APO HSM Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens I was torn being a Canon user for years and buying a non-Canon lens. The price was $1300.00 less than the Canon 500mm. Weight and size were an issue also, the lens head is smaller and fits better in traveling cases. Carrying this lens (6.9 lbs) on a monopod you will notice the difference. I have submitted photo using this lens to my mentor who has a Canon 500mm lens and he did not see a difference.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens at a Great Price. I use this lens professionally to cover the presidential campaign and for fun shooting wildlife and find it to be every bit as good as my old Canon 500mm f/4 but at a big savings. The focus is fast, accurate and quiet and the lens quality is amazing but much lighter than the Canon. Okay it doesn't have the IS but I'm too old to handhold it anyway! It is not the exact equal of Canon but it is 98% for a lot less money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as Sharp as I Had Hoped, So Far I am using this lens with a Sony a7rii + Metabones T Smart Adapter Mark IV. I chose the Canon version of the lens with the Metabones because I wanted to use the camera's auto-focus. With the Sony version of the lens, you have to use the Sony LAEA4 adapter which overrides the camera's auto-focus. The Canon version of the lens also has range selection and HSM auto-focus, which the Sony version does not. In any case, the combo didn't work well at all when I first attached it. Then, I checked the firmware to find it was several versions out-of-date. I updated firmware for both the Metabones and my a7rii. The auto-focus functions pretty well ... faster than I was expecting based on reviews I had read. HOWEVER ... out of the 500 or so bird pics I have take so far, none of them are as sharp as I was expecting ... not as sharp as I get with my Tamron 150-600mm at 500mm. The pictures look in-focus but are missing the fine detail I often get with the Tamron. I was expecting just the opposite. My assumption is that microadjustment should not be necessary since the lens/adapter combo is using the camera's AF, so I don't know what to try next. I have tried stopping the Sigma down to the same as the Tamron, but that doesn't appear to be the issue.
