The Tiffen 127mm Non-Rotating UltraPol Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

Tiffen Ultra Pol Overview

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is non-coated, has approximately 40% average light transmission, and is designed to provide a polarization effect that is 15 to 20% greater than other Tiffen filters which only provide a linear or circular polarization effect and are not UltraPol filters.

The Tiffen 127mm Non-Rotating UltraPol Circular Polarizer Filter is constructed from Water White glass for increased clarity as well as color fidelity and features an aluminum-alloy filter ring that does not rotate. The intensity of the polarization effect can be adjusted with the use of third-party or custom filter holders.

Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Non-coated.
Approximately 40% average light transmission.
4x filter factor reduces exposure by 2 stops.
Constructed from Water White glass for increased optical clarity.
Non-rotating, aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight.
127mm front filter threads allow for use with other filters.
Polarization effect intensity can be adjusted with the use of third-party or custom filter holders.
Padded pouch included for storage and transport.

question

What is the differences between this model and http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/398871-REG/Schneider_68013038_138_mm_True_Linear_Polarizing.htmlIt seems like its just different descriptions but the same product. The only noticeable difference is a 10 year warranty on the more expensive model. What exactly does this cover? Does it cover it breaking?
Asked by: Anonymous
Basically, there are two types of Polarizing filters; Linear and Circular. Linear are used for manual focusing as they can confuse AF sensors. Circular filters are designed for AF lenses and cameras but can be used on manual focus cameras as well. For more details on the two, please see: http://bhpho.to/MF21zoThe Schneider 138mm True-Linear Polarizing Glass filter is optimized for motion picture and television cameras. Having an extinction ratio of ER 374, the Schneider True-Pol is 12-times more effective than other polarizing filters. The 138mm Circular Ultra Polarizing Filter from Tiffen is a similar filter yielding a more intense look to your images and is designed for AF cameras. Because of manufacturing differences, circular polarizing filters cost more than comparable linear filters. Both filters come with ten year warranties that cover manufacturing or workmanship defects.

question

Will I need to buy any kind of rotating adapter to drop this in? I have a matte box (on order) that states: 2 universal 360 degree rotating filter stages + 2 filter trays that support both 4x4 and 4x5.65 filter sizes
Asked by: Rob L.
Which matte box did you purchase? Does it accept 138mm filters?
