Cokin CU960 overview

This kit contains a Cokin Z-Pro Filter Holder plus:
#121L Graduated Light Gray G2 Filter
#121M Graduated Medium Gray G2 Filter
#121S Graduated Soft Gray G2 Filter

Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed.

Cokin graduated gray ND filters are part clear, part neutral density. They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly. A ND.6-to-clear, with a two stop differential, will generally compensate the average bright sky-to-foreground situation and is also the most popular density of the series.

The Z-PRO Series is recommended for focal lengths of 20mm onwards (in the 35mm format).

Note: These filters measure 100 x 150mm (4 x 6") and fit the Cokin Z-Pro Filter Holder. The kit does NOT contain a Cokin adapter ring - sold separately

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Z-Pro filters are made of CR39 resin which is a reputable lightweight and unbreakable optical material also used for ophthalmic glasses

Cokin CU960 reviews

Z-Pro U960 Pro Graduated Neutral Density Filter Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 55.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cokin Z-Pro U960 GND Filter Kit Filter set comes in an impressive bag. There weren't any instructions but I was able to find a video online of how to set up. Very easy to use once you know how. I've only played around in the backyard so far, but have a trip planned to Sedona, AZ where I will use extensively. I think it is a great buy for the price. You get 3 GND filters plus holder for the price of 2 filters. You must by the adapter ring separately. The adapter ring is specific to the size filter of the lens you plan to use the filters on. Very happy so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Filter Kit and Upgrade Upgraded from the Cokin P-series to the Z-Pro. This is a fantastic kit that was nicely put together. Comes with 3 filters each in a nice soft sleeve to keep them protected and everything plus my Nuance 9 Stop fit into the storage case that come with it. **Storage case is HUGE, as many point out, but it also stores everything and it easily straps to the side of my backpack. Only suggestion or wish I would have for Cokin is that they could loose the middle filter and replace it with something more like a 3 stop hard edge to make the kit better we rounded.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter Kit This came with three filters with really nice envelopes to keep them in. The carrying case holds all the filters and filter holder and is made well and easy to carry with a long enough strap to put across you shoulder. The medium gray and soft gray filters seem to be very close in color and I really can't tell much of a difference. I probably would have preferred a 3 stop gray filter instead of either the soft gray or medium gray. I have used them for sunset's and they add a lot to the photo. You do have to buy a separate adapter ring, it would have been nice if it had been included in the kit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It is not really for wide angle lenses.. I bought this kit for my wide angle lenses. In contrast to manufacturer's claim, I clearly see vignetting effect with my full frame lens and full frame body at 24mm, NOT 20mm as stated in the specs. I even modified the holder according to one of reviewers here: reverse the screws and only put one slot in the front, I still see vignetting effect! The material used is plastic: decent quarlity. But it is Cokin not B+W or Lee, you get what you paid for: it is not as refined or polished. Three knobs serve to hold adpator ring are poor designed and crafted. Each filter comes with its own pocket which is very nice, since I wear them down rather quickly. But the filter walet is HUGE! It is way too bigger for 4x6 filters. It is also very thick, in fact, it has 8-10 slots and you can probably place 10 or more filters in it. I can not image that I carry it and hike to shooting destination, since I most shoot landscape, for which these filters were designed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant, love it! Build quality of filter holder is great, and filters have opened my eyes to landscape photography! The bag that comes with the kit is also good quality, but too bulky for me to use. I was very excited to test these filters individually and combined, I was pleasantly surprised of results. I have read reviews that have criticized these filters as not true ND filters and Lee are much better. I haven't noticed any color casts with my tests (very early days) and haven't bought any Lee filters yet to compare. If you use the holder as it comes with a 17mm lens you'll see the holder in edge of your photos, esp if you rotate it. To prevent this: unscrew the 4 screws and move the front third slots to the rear of holder and reverse the screws to extend to the rear of the holder. The P series has the same problem - the only way to fix this is to actually cut off the front protruding slot, the third slots are generally not needed anyway.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bringing back old school effects! With new age editing technology like Photoshop, its hard to go back to your roots when you can create it all in front of your computer. But my photography professor once said to us, Its best to capture it in the camera than spending hours editing! I'm going back to my days of film photography where there was no editing programs to adjust your skies and darken your highlights. I was a fan of filters then and I am pushing myself back to them now! I can't wait to use them for my Yosemite trip this Spring.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Control Mother Nature Well worth the wait. It had been out of stock when I went to buy it. I just got back from South Beach, Miami. I saved many sunsise pictures from being blown out in the sky. Nice carry case with extra room in it for more filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Alternative to the more expensive brand Have been using circular filters for years, I wish I had purchased these filters long ago. They make a tremendous difference when shooting in daylight conditions. If you apply the filters correctly, blown out skies become acceptable and show detail. The are also good for slowing down motion, shooting a waterfall or moving stream the filter will smooth out the water and give it a creamy blurred effect, of course you need a tripod to achieve these types of photos. These filters are a great addition to anyone equipment.
