Does anyone know for sure if this attachment can take strips of negatives or does it only take sides in mounts? I looked at the Novoflex site, but it seems ambiguous.
It has a single metal spring clip so it is not well suited for unmounted film. You could tape the negs but that is a pain if you have large volumes.

What lighting source is appropriate to use behind this? How to know the capability of the camera shooting the slide?
Any light source would be fine. TTL flash might be the best. A diffused window light would work. I used a dichroic enlarger light source. Regardless of the light source you will want to shield the lens to minimize flare. The lens used must be able to focus very close, so either a macro lens or a lens with extension tubes.

Will this work with a SONY RX10 iii?
I use a Sony a7r II with a full frame sensor and interchangeable lens capability: when I duplicate slides I use the Sony 50mm f2.8 Macro lens and the Castel-mini focusing rack and the slide copying attachment. This setup allows me to make 1:1 images of the complete slide. Not sure if your RX10 will allow for the macro 1:1 image. Hope this helps.
