The stand includes an anti-rotation feature, so you don't have to hold the lower shaft to prevent it loosening from the base. To lock, just grab the pistol grip and turn the shaft clockwise. To release and adjust the height, simply step on the foot pedal, grab the grip, and turn the shaft counter-clockwise.
