Coronado manufactures products which allow you to directly observe the sun, as opposed to merely photographing or otherwise indirectly observing it, and they do so with 100% safety for the viewer. Gazing directly at the plethora of everchanging details within the sun is a thrilling experience indeed. By combining the optical design of the price-friendly P.S.T. with the Calcium K line filters of the SolarMax 70 CaK, Coronado makes solar discovery a real, attainable aspect of astronomy.
There are two options for observing with Coronado's systems: supreme quality sun-specific refractor telescopes which provide more detail of our star, and a system to adapt your own telescope to be used. The latter requires the purchase of a SolarMax filter, a BF-series Blocking Filter and an adapter plate specific to your telescope.
The unique CaK filter isolates a layer of the Sun that is below and slightly cooler than the layer viewed with a Coronado Hydrogen Alpha filter. The transmission line is centered at 393.4 nanometers, and is isolated using thermally stable interference filters. Given that this telescope has a much smaller aperture than its bigger brother, the SolarMax 70 CaK, you can anticipate a drop in resolution-but not in contrast, safety, or quality. The magnificent super granulation cells that gather and strengthen in this layer of the Chromosphere may not be visible to all, as most humans eyes (through the process of aging) are not particularly sensitive to this wavelength. The primary purpose of any CaK instrument is for imaging.
The included 12.5mm Kellner eyepiece is very sharp but is not well suited to use if you have eyeglasses. In that case, a long eye relief eyepiece of a similar focal length is recommended, and you'll find such an eyepiece listed amongst the optional accessories for this telescope.
