Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Honestly maybe better than the metal rectangle version. I kinda like how it collapses and is able to be threaded on top of my lens filter and can still keep a lens cap on.

good alternative to original lens hood.

This rubber hood is great. It fits nicely and retracts so I can fit a lens cap on without alot of fuss.

Will this hood work on the Pentax 50-200 lens?

Pentax SMC Pentax DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED WR Zoom Lens has a 49mm front thread therefore Pentax 49mm Rubber Lens Hood (Round) for 50mm FA, F & A-Lenses can be screw on the lens. However this product is design to cover a focal range of 50mm therefore you can still get glare at a longer focal range. I would recomend getting a long collapsible rubber lens hood.
