    Pelican 1490CC1 reviews

1490CC1 Computer Case with Lid Organizer and Tray (Desert Tan) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Case for Location work I'm a commercial photographer that does a lot of location work, and was looking for a laptop case for this purpose. After watching Chase Jarvis' laptop case video (see youtube!), I was inspired to replicate his solution which is based on the 1490 CC1 case. I certainly wasn't disappointed. I can fit a 15 MacBook Pro, with two LaCie Rugged Hard drives stored underneath the laptop, and have room for a spare battery, power adapter, card reader and more stored in the top flap. Highly recommended for those that travel off the beaten track and need to pack a laptop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great case for the latest MBP 15 I usually transport my laptop in the back of my SUV with my photo gears, so this is a great case to protect my MacBook Pro. 15 MBP (late 2011 version) fits really tight on the width, so I had to remove the entire side piece, but kept the top piece. MBP 15 snuggly fit inside the tray. I also can fit my G-Tech 750 GB mini drive, MBP power cables and 3 different types of G-Tech cable, mouse, file folders, etc. IMPORTANT: The description does not include the shoulder strap and the web page recommends shoulder strap, but it comes it with the case, so do not order separately. I ordered separately thinking that it does not come with it. Now I will have to return it... Overall, very satisfied with the case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I was looking for! After reviewing available cases, I decided that the Pelican 1490CC1 would meet my need for a strong, shockproof, watertight case. It meets it exactly. Not shown in the product pictures was a central ridge in the tray directly beneath the strap used to secure the contents. This means that there is not a single piece of foam material beneath any device secured in the case but rather two divided by a soft plastic ridge. I don't think this makes any difference in the level of protection afforded.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly What I Wanted The case works great for my HP notebook. I turned the computer tray around and made a small cut out so I can access the USB ports and card slot. With an external hard drive and a card reader held in the lid organizer and a broadband card, I don't have to take the computer out of the case to use it in the field. I can photograph, download to the computer and review the images in the field with a client. The case is as sturdy as they come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Travel Case Picked this up to use as a all-in-one travel case for when I shoot on location. After some minor modifications I was able to permanently install the computer, external hard drive, USB hub, two card readers, and a iPhone cable for tethering. This give me the ability to shoot, download, edit, and transmit images without having to hook up everything every time. Dont really need to mention the fact that its built like a tank since after all it is a Pelican case.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 1490CC1 Computer Case I use this case for air travel for my 14 laptop, It's okay, and overall I am very happy with the unit. It's a bit on the heavy side. Locking latches are good enough quality and the case is very rugged looking. I'm sure I won't be having any problems. If given the same opportunity to purchase again I would seriously look at carbon fibre alternatives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very adaptable! Can be easily customized I use my laptop primarily as a mobile office but also as a mobile theatrical lighting controller. I wanted a case that would allow me to customize my laptop's configuration, along with its accessories, in such a way that I could operate it without removing it from the case. After watching an online video of a photographer that customized one of these cases for on-location photo shoots I thought it would work well for my application. Though I wasn't initially looking to spend so much money on a case, the peace-of-mind at having my laptop and all its accessories in a very well protected and secure case has been worth it. Prior to purchasing this case I transported my laptop in the laptop compartment of a backpack, with all its accessories stored in various other compartments. This worked okay but it definitely did not provide much protection and it took a lot of time to set up and tear down the computer every time I changed locations. I would definitely recommend the laptop tray and organizer with this case. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite m640 and it fits nicely into the main tray space (it was a little small for the space but the included foam strips were easily modified to keep the laptop from sliding around). The compartment next to the main tray space works well to store my power adapter and the USB device I use to connect to theatrical lighting systems. I made a cutout in the right side of the main tray space that allows me to access all of my video ports, headphone port, power connector, and one USB port without removing the laptop from the case. I purchased a couple right-angled USB cable extenders to make the USB ports on the left side of the laptop accessible without removing it from the case. There are a couple smaller spaces beneath the main tray space with diced foam that are perfect for mounting accessories. I chose to mount an external hard drive in one of the spaces and to use the other for storage of miscellaneous accessory cables. The lid organizer works perfectly to hold my external optical mouse, a couple CD's and software documents, a voice recorder, a thumb drive, and a miniature external keyboard. I also mounted a USB hub in the lid organizer and routed its cable down beneath the laptop so it would always be plugged in as long as the computer is in the case. My biggest complaint would have to be that because my computer is on the thicker side (it has an extended battery that sticks out the bottom and causes the computer to sit at an angle) I can't put too much in the lid organizer or it will put pressure on the LCD when I try to close the case (there is even a warning card about this in the case when you first buy it). When there is too much in the lid organizer it can be a little hard to open the case (I have to hold the lid down as I undo the latches). Once you have worked out a system for how much you can put in and where this isn't a huge problem, you just have to be careful when you are first experimenting with the setup of your case. Possibly because of my particular laptop design I have not had any issues with overheating while running the laptop in the case. My extended battery provides a little more air room beneath the computer that otherwise would not be there and the inlet and outlet cooling vents are not significantly blocked by any of the foam or tray parts (especially after making the cutout in the side of the main tray space for access to my ports). I also chose to leave a good portion of the diced foam out from beneath the laptop for storage of accessory cables and also for improved air flow. The construction of the case itself is great, it makes you feel like it is going to last and it is going to protect your computer no matter what. Just make sure that whenever you go to pick up the case that you double-check that the laptop Velcro strap is secured and the lid latches are closed, otherwise it might open up when you pick it up, dumping your now unprotected computer onto the floor! The lid latches include keyed locks that are very durable but if that isn't enough security for you there is a spot to attach your own padlocks to the case (which is especially handy if you want to use a security cable to anchor the case to an immovable object). Since it is the size of a typical briefcase it feels comfortable to hold the case by the handle for shorter periods and by the shoulder strap for longer periods. My case, fully loaded as described, weighs approximately 17 pounds. Overall, I would recommend this case to anyone who is serious about protecting their laptop while keeping it mobile. If you want to be able to get your laptop up and running with minimal setup (open the case and push the power button) the customizable nature of the laptop tray and lid organizer is the way to go. If you have no intention of ever running your laptop within the case (basically you need a storage case versus a briefcase) you could go for the version of the case that is filled with diced foam, rather than the laptop tray. If your goal is to run your laptop without removing it from the case be sure to consider the placement of your cooling fans and various ports; be prepared to have to make cutouts in the laptop tray or purchase cable extenders. You will also most likely want to have an external mouse and a compact external keyboard as resting your arms on the edge of the case to operate the computer can be pretty uncomfortable. I would also suggest ensuring that your laptop can be removed from the case with relative ease for those times that you want to just sit it on your lap and work directly with the computer outside of the case.
