Wimberley F-9 overview

  • 1Description

The Wimberley F-9 Flash Bracket consists of modules M3 & M9. It attaches directly to the swinging arm of the Wimberley Head Version II. Since it is attached to the head and not your lens, it remains in place when you switch lenses.

The bracket folds flat for easy storage. When folded flat, the bracket can also be used with side-mount gimbal heads such as the Wimberley Sidekick.

Note: This bracket will not work with the old version of the Wimberley Head, which is compatible with the F-4 Bracket.

Elevates the mounting point for the flash 5.5" above the center axis of the lens.

    Wimberley F-9 reviews

F-9 Flash Bracket for Head Version II is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs modification for adjustability... The bracket is of superior quality to be sure. When using a Better Beamer on my Canon 580EX II, the flash body sags a bit but enough to need adjustment to get it back to level. Unfortunately, Wimberley choose to use cheap phillips screws to align the base with the arm. In order adjust the tilt of the flash, you need to unscrew either phillips screw, then re-tighten the base. They should have put small thumbscrews or a completely different design so that it is adjustable in the field without a phillips screwdriver. For as much as they're charging for this, I would have expected much more. It's incredibly overpriced for basically a couple pieces of aluminum.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid construction; easy to use; costly This flash bracket attaches to the vertical swinging arm of the Wimberley Head version II via the Arca-Swiss style dovetail on the arm. The bracket uses a quick-release attachment so its fast and easy to install. Installation allows attachment of an off camera shoe cord (purchased separately) and your flash. The shoe cord is then attached to your camera on the Wimberley Head. Since the bracket is attached to the head and not directly to your camera or lens, it and your flash, remain in place above your camera and independent from your lens whether the camera is in the landscape or portrait mode. Fast, easy, solid, well-designed, and folds flat for storage.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Needs easier tilt adjustment... There's no way to adjust the tilt of this without a phillips head screwdriver. When you load it up with a flash and better beamer, the flash head tilts down a little. Not enough to be overcome by tilting the flash up enough for the first click adjustment on the flash itself, but enough to tilt the coverage out of the picture when using an 800mm. They should have used thumbscrew or some other way of adjusting it properly in the field. Also, it's way too expensive for what it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful in many ways First of all I use it with a SB900 with the SC-29 cable together with Nikon 500mm f4. Works superb. However, to extend the usability of the F-9 bracket, I drilled a hole in the upper arm in order to attach a standard hot shoe for my remote control receiver (since the flash shoe on the camera is occupied by SC-29). Moreover, since I have a Kirk L-plate on my camera, I can attach the Wimberley F-9 on the L-plate (both under the camera and on the side of the camera) as well. This is useful when I do portraits or macro (on a Kirk-head on a tripod) using the Wireless Speedlight Commander Unit SU-800 attach to the SC-29 cable together with the remote control receiver. In this way it is easy to use the Right Angle Viewfinder DR-6 since the SU800 is not in the way for my head anymore.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but the F1 is more useful This bracket is well-made, light, and compact. However, since it must attach to the Wimberley Head, and not the camera, there's pretty much only one place it can go. It blocks access to the focus ring on my big lens. If you're undecided, purchase the F-1 bracket, and you'll be able to adjust placement a bit more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works just like it is supposed to I am using this on the Wimberly II to get my flash off the camera. It does the job just like it is supposed to. The pieces fit together easily and seems to be sturdy. Cons, just the high price

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition to Wimberley Gimbal head ii I use this for bird photography. It gets the flash higher and prevents steel eye.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight and excellent I originally used a bracket to attach Flash and Better Beamer to the camera body itself, the weight would sometimes cause the camera body to come undone from either the lens or the extender. This simple, and very effective adaptor attaches directly to the Wimberley Gimbal head very securely and is adaptable for height.Definitively worth the money.
