The Quantum Q Flash Model X5DR can be powered by the Qpaq-X system. It can also be powered by a Lumedyne or Norman pack, with appropriate adapters, for up to 400 watt/seconds of auto-flash. Quantum Instruments X5DR TTL Flash Head is a completely automated flash head with 4 user selectable operating modes. Flash control is either Automatic, Manual, Stroboscopic, or TTL (with optional adapters for TTL camera control)

Note: The X5DR cannot be powered by the Quantum Turbo Battery --
only the Q-Paq System, Norman 400B, or Lumedyne Powerpacks with Batteries.
Start with the Quantum PX Command Module. Build your system up to 800 watt-seconds (to power 2- X5DR's @ 400 w/s each) with 200 watt-second PXC modules, then snap on a High Capacity PB1 or Compact PB2 Battery, all available separately.

For Full TTL Operation, a TTL compatible camera and a Quantum TTL Module Cord are required

TTL Mode
The X5DR series, used with FreeXwire, supports wireless control of all dedicated camera-flash functions -- including Manual, TTL, Auto, Auto-fill and TTL-Ratio -- up to 500 feet away.
Multi-Brand Camera-Compatible
Qflash X5DR blends seamlessly with Canon, Nikon and other professional digital camera systems, using Quantum's proprietary QTTL adapters. In some cases, it even provides capabilities a camera system may not support, such as wireless remote Fill-Flash.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Power and Versatality I use this strobe alone and in groups with T5D-R-s It is the same size as the T5D-R, very portable and works with the Quantum FreeXwire radiocontrol system. This unit is very unique as it has 400Ws power output when using with Qpaq power pack and can be used in E-TTL mode with my Canon EOS gear. It is very quick to use for lighting ratio setting in a group when using QTTL adapter. I do not need to use flashmeter to set the ratios of the groups as I can set them through the flashes. It can be used in studio and on location very effectively. This is a professional product for special application and it is expensive, but worth every penny.

    Rated 1 out of 5 by from Difficult to control auto modes Unit worked great in manual mode, but poorly in auto and TTL modes. I found both Auto (Quantum controlled) and TTL (Camera controlled) modes to perform inconsistently. For instance I would take a photo and the flash might display an error telling me I was one stop overexposed. The simple adjustment that seems obvious is to turn the exposure dial on the Quantum adaptor that mounts to the hot shoe. Sometimes I could turn the dial up or down and the flash output would change, but sometimes it would not. When this would happen I would go to manual mode and find that the flash was still capable of increasing or reducing power as I wanted, but I was unable to get it to do so in auto or TTL mode. In a very annoying controlled test I set up a gray scale background and light meter outdoors in the bright sun. I took the first image with both the camera and flash set to nominal automatic exposure. I found the flash portion of the image to be overexposed by one stop and the Quantum flash gave me an error saying it was one stop overexposed. I then turned the Quantum exposure dial to -1 stop and retook the image. The result was unchanged and the light meter indicated the exact same flash output. The Quantum again displayed an error message saying the image was 1 stop overexposed. I then set the Quantum dial to +1 stop. This third image was still exactly the same and flash output again measured exactly the same which means changing the exposure dial setting was having no effect. Interestingly, the now the Quantum now said the exposure was good, presumably because it thought I had decided I wanted the image to be 1 stop over exposed. I ran the same test in TTL mode with similar, but inconsistent results. I used the Quantum for a family portrait photo session in bright outdoor sun and found it to work great. Most images required no exposure adjustment. The couple of times I decided to try moving the Quantum exposure dial the flash output appeared to change as I desired. I then used the Quantum for a wedding. The very first outdoor shot I took was severely over exposed. I turn the Quantum dial to -3 stops and found no change. I switched from TTL to Auto and found no change. I switched the Quantum to manual, set it to 1/2 power and found the image now slightly underexposed. I powered everything down, checked all connections, and tried again. Both automatic modes were still overexposing and not reacting to setting changes. I gave up and switched to my Canon 580EX flash. Note: One month prior to this I purchased the basic 200 watt second Quantum flash and had the same exact issues. I purchased this newer X5D model because I really wanted a higher powered flash that would operate in auto modes. I returned both Quantum units and am trying to decide what to purchase next. If I am willing to run in manual mode then I believe the Elinchrom 400Wsec unit is a more rugged unit at a much lower price. One last comment.... The 200Wsec Quantum Qflash at max power produced 1/3 stop LESS light than my Canon 580EX flash. If I removed the diffuser from the reflector then it was 1/3 stop more than the 580EX on center, but now 1 full stop less light 15 degrees off center.
