Designed as a complete microphone setup for location recording in budget film work and broadcasting, electronic news gathering (ENG), and field production applications, this B&H Kit eliminates the guesswork in configuring a shotgun microphone system that delivers quality and reliability while remaining cost effective. It features the Audio-Technica AT897 phantom-/battery-powered shotgun microphone, a furry windshield, a universal shoe/pole shockmount, a pistol grip, an aluminum cabled boompole, a boompole bag, and short and long right-angled XLR cables to provide you with everything necessary for capturing audio for video, film, and sound design applications.

Audio-Technica AT897 Shotgun Microphone

Well suited for indie films, nature recording, and documentary projects, the Audio-Technica AT897 shotgun microphone features smooth on-axis tone and great off-axis sound rejection while its housing remains short enough for camera-mounted operation. Plus, it can be operated via phantom power or a battery for flexible compatibility.

The AT897's moderate sensitivity delivers optimal performance when paired with high-gain, low-noise microphone preamps. With a selectable low-cut filter at 80 Hz, the AT897 is capable of delivering clear sound while attenuating rumble and bass buildup. Plus, its full-spectrum frequency response utilizes a gentle increase in high frequencies to enhance intelligibility.

The durable housing ensures rugged dependability while maintaining a light weight that won't burden your boompole or camera, and the included accessories accommodate mounting the AT897 to a mic stand, boompole, or camera-mount microphone holder.

Quality Sound
The 11" long AT897 uses an interference tube and a supercardioid polar pattern to yield focused on-axis directionality while attenuating rear-entry sound and rejecting sound at the sides. This makes the AT897 far more effective at capturing distant sources than the omnidirectional mics found in most cameras.
Bass Roll-Off
The high-pass filter can be set to flat or 80 Hz to roll off low-frequency noise from common sources such as air conditioners and traffic.
Battery or Phantom Powered
Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 11 to 52 VDC phantom powering, the AT897 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras. When using devices that don't offer phantom power, the AT897 may be powered by a single AA battery (included).
Ideal for Boompole Mounting
The AT897 includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boompole. Alternatively, mount the AT897 in the Audio-Technica AT8415 shockmount (available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations between your boompole and the mic. The AT897 also includes two rubber O-rings that expand the microphone's diameter to fit the larger mic holders found on many high-end cameras.
Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise
The AT897 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. Enhanced attenuation of wind noise is possible with the addition of an optional windshield such as the Rycote 15 cm Super-Softie, which also provides high immunity to rain.

For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the separately available Rycote Windshield Kit 4, a complete windjammer, windshield, and shockmount suspension system.

Auray Professional Windshield for Shotgun Microphones (5.5")

The Auray WSS Series Professional Windshield delivers superior 360° wind protection with acoustic transparency. They are engineered for dramatic reduction of unwanted broadband wind noise and vocal pops with very little high frequency loss, for exceptionally accurate recordings.

This WSS-2014 Professional Windshield has an inside depth of 5.5" and is designed for use with many shotgun microphones. It features a specially manufactured open-cell foam matrix surrounded by a layer of 25mm thick simulated rabbit fur. This diffusion technology lowers wind velocity in a controlled air space around the microphone, thereby reducing wind noise without muffling the sound. It also features an airtight tapered rubber base that seals out wind from the rear of the microphone, greatly improving isolation and rear wind protection.

When used on a shotgun microphone, this slip-on windshield is effective in minimizing wind noise and plosive sounds. It is most effective in light breeze to strong breeze conditions (4 to 25 mph) and users can generally expect a 24 to 40 dB reduction in wind noise with negligible dampening of high frequencies. For most applications, the negligible high-frequency dampening is a worthwhile exchange for the dramatic wind noise reduction.

In addition to superior 360° wind protection, the WSS-2014 helps prevent moisture and dirt from damaging your microphone. The windscreen is designed to fit microphones from Audio-Technica, Neumann, Røde, Sanken, Sennheiser and others.

The WSS-2014 Professional Windshield for Shotgun Microphones is an advanced solution for outstanding wind protection with acoustic transparency.

Auray BP-47A Aluminum Boompole with Internal Coiled Cable and Bottom Exit (7.5')
The Auray BP-47A is a 4-section, aluminum boompole that combines an anti-twist tube design with ergonomic twist locks to offer smooth telescoping and hassle-free, one-handed operation—great for adjusting the length quickly, on the fly when filming documentary, ENG, or reality-style videos. The boompole has a collapsed length of 2.5', an extended length of 7.5', and weighs only 1.6 lb. The sections are made of lightweight aluminum tubes designed for portability and durability.

An internal, coiled cable with a side-exit XLR connector makes it easy to extend or retract the boompole while streamlining your setup with fewer cables to carry. The custom, removable head tip and drop-through design allow for cable reconfiguration without any soldering required. High-quality Rean and Neutrik connectors are used for reliable signal transfer and uncompromised performance, even in challenging environments.

Durable Aluminum Construction

  • The durable anodized aluminum construction can handle the bumps and impacts of demanding travel and location shoots in all kinds of weather.

Solid Grip and Smooth Telescoping

  • The ergonomic twist locks are covered with rubber grips that are easy on your hands and comfortable to operate, making length adjustment smooth and effortless. Improved shims ensure a firm and secure hold until you loosen the locks.

Anti-Twist Alignment Tubing for One-Handed Operation

  • Quick length adjustment when you're recording on the go is crucial for keeping from interrupting the shoot. With an anti-twist design, adjacent tubes won't twist when you're expanding or retracting the boompole. This allows for one-handed twist lock operation and makes setup and length adjustment fast and easy.

Internal, Coiled Cable with Strain Relief

  • The integrated, coiled XLR cable is engineered to minimize unwanted radio frequency (RF) and electromagnetic (EM) interference that can degrade the audio signal. The coiled design allows the cable to smoothly extend and retract with the telescoping tubes.
  • The tip's strain-relief system absorbs tension, secures the cable, and protects the cable from damage at the edges of the tip exit. Additional strain relief at the bottom of the pole protects and preserves the connections between the cable and the TA3 connector.

Bottom-Exit Connector

  • With a right-angle XLR cable plugged into the bottom-exit connector, the operator can rest the pole on its end without damaging the wiring or connector.
Removable Arrowhead Tip for Solderless Cable Replacement

  • BP Series boompoles feature a removable Arrowhead tip designed to reduce weight at the top of the pole.
  • The tip also allows easy drop-through cable insertion for quick and uncomplicated cable replacement.
  • Thanks to the solderless design, you won't need special tools to replace the XLR cable using the cable replacement kit (available separately).
High-Quality XLR Connectors

  • The internal cable is equipped with high-quality XLR and TA3 (mini XLR) connectors manufactured by Rean. The connectors ensure flawless signal transfer and secure locking connections, preventing the cable from disconnecting, even if there's stress or an accidental tug on the cable.
  • The Neutrik bottom-exit connector is housed in its own casing and ensures a secure connection to the boompole that won't jeopardize signal flow by twisting or jiggling.

Standard 3/8"-16 Threaded Mount

  • The boompole is outfitted with a standard 3/8"-16 threaded mount to ensure compatibility with most professional shotgun mics and shockmounts.

Auray Universal Microphone Pistol Grip

The Auray Universal Microphone Pistol Grip is a handheld grip that features an ergonomic cushioned handle. This grip is great in "run & gun" situations in which a boom pole would be cumbersome, and in video scenarios in which the cameraman is also responsible for audio recording. The grip can be held with one hand, as opposed to a boom pole which requires two. It also provides the option of being able to record audio from a different direction than the camera is pointing, an advantage over camera mounting the mic. Furthermore, having the mic mounted off the camera prevents it from picking up motor noise from the lens focusing.

In addition, the grip features standard 3/8" threads on both ends. This allows you to attach your shotgun mic (with shockmount) to one end of the grip and mount the other end to a boom pole. This gives you the flexibility of being able to quickly detach the pistol grip and the attached shotgun mic from the boom, an option that can come in handy for entering areas that are too small for a boom pole.

I love this mic. I've been using it for many years and when I did a side-by-side comparison to the 416 i couldn't tell a difference. Save a ton a money and get this mic

question

better than at875?
Asked by: Anonymous
The AT897 is slightly more directional due to the length of the tube, as well as the option to self power via AA battery. These would be the major differences.

I'm looking to shoot two or three people in one shot, with the boom overhead on a stand. Mostly indoors. Would this mic capture everyone's dialogue if there is no boom operator to move to the speaker?
Asked by: Jason
A shotgun mic should be used to pick up dialog from one person, or professional sounding audio. If you use it to pick up two people, the sound will become thin. I would suggest using a boom person, or setting up two mics in a stereo configuration.

I’m shooting a film on an iphone. Is there a way to connect this mic with the phone?
Asked by: Natalia
The Saramonic LC-XLR Female XLR to Lightning Microphone Adapter Cable for iOS Devices (B&H # SALCXLR) can be used to connect the AT897 to your iPhone You will need to use a battery to power the mic since the iPhone can not supply phantom power. The other options for cables are the Saramonic SR-XLR35 XLR Female to 3.5mm TRRS Microphone Cable for DSLR Cameras and Smartphones (B&H # SASRXLR35) combined with the Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter (B&H # APLAADAP). The MXL Female XLR to 3.5mm Male TRRS and 3.5mm Female TRS Multimedia Adapter Cable for Select Dynamic Microphones (B&H # MXMMCABLE) provides a 3.5mm TRS headphone tap which allows you to monitor the sound while recording. This cable can also be combined with the Apple Lightning adapter for use with an iPhone.

question

Slide switch up or down for phantom power ?
Asked by: George B.
Neither. The switch is a low cut filter. If a AA battery is inside of the microphone, you do not need phantom power. If there is no battery inside, then you need phantom power.

question

I'm encountering A LOT of fuzz in the background when recording with this straight into my 5dMKii does anyone have a solution?
Asked by: Anonymous
There can definitely be issues with connecting to the MK II's directly. In the long term, look into an external recorder. For now maybe search around for solutions for the exact model of your firmware/camera and external mics. Might be interference from bad hardware.
