Mostly A Good Option For LDC With Large Headbasket

Large Diaphragm Condenser Mics With A Large Head Basket Or An Unusual Shape Are Actually Tricky To Place An Adequate Foam Wind Screen Upon. Most Options I Found Are Not Tall Enough To Completely Cover The Head Basket, Which Is A Non Starter. I Found A Foam Wind Screen From One Company (name = Rye Coat) And The Company Typically Produces Shock Mounts And Such That I Rely Upon And Consider Very Fine Products. And In Truth, The Foam Wind Screen From That Company Is Well Made And It Achieves The Goal Of Completely Covering The Headbasket (on My United Studio Technologies TWIN 87, Which Is A Really Large Head Basket!) On My Mics BUT… It Colors The Frequency Response Of The Mic’s Audio Capture. : (. Big Frowns Face. I Mean, It Is Not A Horrible Change, But It Alters What I Can Expect From The Mic Which Is Problematic. This MXL Foam Wind Screen Is A Lateral Move In Some Repects, But It Accomplishes The Task In An Important Way… Yes, This Foam Wind Screen Does Indeed Cover The Large Headbasket Of My Large Diaphragm Mics, So That Is A Win. It Does NOT Alter The Frequency Capture Of The Mic’s Which Is A REALLY Important Point. The Caveat Is, It Is Not As Effective At Blocking Wind Noise And Voice Pops/ Breath Sounds, So It Gets 4 Stars. Ultimately, This Foam Wind Screen Accomplishes Its Task As Long As You Are Realistic About Your Expectations. #1 It Will Adequately Cover A Large Headbasket. #2 It Does NOT Change The Frequency Capture Of The Mic/ It Is Delivering Transparent Foam Covering. #3 It Will NOT Perform Adequately In Higher Wind Noise Settings. Soooo…. Use It Indoors Or On A Stage In A Low Wind Environment (it Will Block Modest Or Low Winds, Like Wind From An AC Handler, Which Is Important). AND, Make Sure Your Talent Backs Off The Mic Body Just A Little Bit And Then The Foam Wind Screen Will Block Pops And Breath Noise. Use This Tool Within Its Limitations And It Will Serve You Well.

Love the windscreen.

Will this fit the MXL r144?If so is it snug or loose on the mic?
Asked by: Randall
The MXL R144 is 1.85-inches in diameter, so this windscreen should fit the mic nicely. It will not be too loose.

question

would this one fit mxl 890 condenser microphone ?
Asked by: son n.
It fits my 2003a perfectly, but the 890 is a rounder, wider microphone. It may fit, but it would be tight.
