Photoflex 871090 Overview

  • 1Description

Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

This size is perfect for a 1-2 person head, or head-to-waist shot, or a 4x6 ft product setup.

Fabrics are color balanced to all Photoflex soft boxes, panels and discs.

    Photoflex 871090 Reviews

45- Convertible Umbrella (White) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 116.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Great umbrella. I prefered the results from the white shoot through, so I eventually traded this one for the 45 white shoot through Photoflex umbrella which is fantastic, and I don't have to worry about removing the black cover. Regarding whether to purchase a 45 vs 60, I have used them both, and the 45 for me was just as good as the 60 for a full view of a group of 3 people on a couch. I could not tell any significant difference in the photos. However, the 60 is really huge for indoors and it's heavy and makes your light stand less stable even if you have a great light stand. I highly recommend Photoflex 45 umbrellas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Price and Performance I bought this along with the 60 version for a family Easter photo shoot. I wasn't sure which size I needed, so I got both, figuring that I' use it for something. This is my first experience with a studio setup, so I did not want to spend a lot and wanted to get a lot for my money. For this, the price is right. I have only used this in bounce setup, so I cannot comment on its shoot through abilities. But it seems to get the job done. It provides an adequate light source, and teamed up with the 60, I was able to get some great group shots (5 kids) of the family. It seems to be well made for the price and should hold up well if I take care of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product This was a replacement for my previous Photoflex 45-inch convertible. After twelve years or so of consistent use, it was finally starting to show its age a little. I use this product both as a shoot-through and a bounce umbrella with the black cover; it works well in both modes. Photoflex's white satin is a little more silvery than some other brand's white, so the quality of light, particularly with the bounce, is slightly more specular and directional than you might expect. But it's a handsome light and has given me some fine portraits.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good fit for a first time umbrella I was a little worried at first when I got this since it was not completely white, more of a silver with a white cast, but the light it produced was phenominal! Going to purchase another one along with a stand in the next month.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for portable work or studio I am a part time professional. I have a variety of Photoflex products. I recently had a need to add a few more 40+ inch umbrellas to my collection of light shaping equipment. I purchased this umbrella due to option to add or remove the black backing. You can shoot through the umbrella or use it as a reflector, managing your pass through light with the black backer. I plan to use this umbrella as a primary reflector with my shoe mount Canon 580 exII for some on location work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Photoflex umbrella Well constructed umbrella, the composite ribs are much better than standard metal ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Umbrella good light distribution Using this with a Manfroto 11' Basic Light Stand. My primary light source at the moment is a Canon 580EX II Speedlite. Even though the description says white the inside of the umbrella has a reflective look much like you see on the reflective strips on nighttime jogging clothes. I have yet to remove the black backing, however it does come off completely or you can take just some of it off to get the desired light effect. The center screw holds the black material at the top of the umbrella. The hole in the black material to allow for the post to go through has a round of stiching in it for better durability. However I would recommend care as it could rip on you during removal and replacement by getting caught on the threading of the post where the cap goes on. I like the solid metal post for this umbrella rathar than hollow ones that would get crushed when screwing them down to light stand. Also the plastic ribs make it lighter and less fragile than older metal ribs that once bent out of shape, are gone forever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Photoflex is aways the best choice It's an umbrella that works, looks good, and lasts a longtime. I have bought umbrellas for over 30 years and I still like the Photoflex products the best. Even though its just an umbrella this one just seams to be the best overall.

what is the material for the interior of this item??
    Asked by: Linfeng N.
The interior material for these umbrellas is a tightly woven, white nylon. In the standard configuration with the black backing, the material acts as a reflector, resulting in a soft spread of light. If the black backing is removed, the white material can be used in a shoot through configuration.
