Photogenic Eclipse overview

  • 1Description

This Photogenic EC45BC Eclipse 45" White Flat-Panel Umbrella with its removable black cover has an extra white satin panel added during construction. The result is the elimination of the reflection of the metal frame of the umbrella in the eyes of your subject, or on highly reflective surfaces, such as chrome or brass.
This size is perfect for portraits of 1 or 2 people, and small product set ups.
This umbrella is designed for use with strobe lighting.

Note: Using this umbrella with modeling lights or constant lights brighter than 300 watts for prolonged sessions will result in eventual discoloration or scorching.

Softens and broadens the light output of any strobe or lower wattage constant light.
Removable black cover allows the light source to "shoot-through", as a more direct light.

Note:Ribs are hidden in bounce mode. Removing black cover for shoot-through exposes the ribs.

    Photogenic Eclipse reviews

    EC45BC Eclipse 45" White Flat-Panel Umbrella is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 37.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic value for money I was supprised at the quality of this umbrella having paid so little for it. The internal Satin panel on the inside makes the item look a lot more expensive than it acually was. The satin panel returns good light, not as stong as a silver umbrella(which tend to be to harsh on close up work), but also softens the light. I have only used it as a reflector so far and must say I am very happy with it. Having used lots of umbrellas over the last 10 years, I would have to admit this is one of the better ones I own. I am curious how it will last over time, but having said that, it's cheap enought to replace.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excelent performance and value I have three of these umbrellas in use in my studio. I primarily use them with the cover on for my backdrop strobes, and occasionally as a fill modifier. I also use these with big groups when soft boxes aren't appropriate. The umbrellas are excellent quality. The build is good and they do not seem cheap at all. I have had two for several years, and a third just purchased recently. The quality of light is excellent as well. I have tried the shoot through mode once or twice and it is effective (But not something I typically do). The only thing that I could say isn't great about them is the fact that they can be fragile. I broke one when my light stand fell over and the light fell against the metal structure of the umbrella. Saved my strobe but bent the metal so I had to get a new one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice, but could be improved Umbrella is very nice, especially the enclosed ribs. Very useful to have removable black cover. My only complaint is that the hole in the center of the black cover (where it slips over the shaft) should have a grommet or something similar. The fabric is just loose and there are loose threads flying all over. The umbrella shaft is threaded so I thought I was missing something as the cover just slips over (no nut). The fabric fits tight over the umbrella so it's not a problem, just a fit and finish issue. Seems like the cover won't last as long as it should. Shame on them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny!! I have owned Eclipse umbrellas for years and I recently purchase four (4) new ones. I purchase two (2) 32 and two (2) 45 white umbrellas. These are fantastic tools and will add about two stops to your exposure. The catch lights are very clean, round and without the star effect in the subjects eyes. You can pay less or you can pay more but for my money, you can't go wrong with the Eclipse. In addition, I also have the 60 white and silver versions and have been using them for years. As a professional photographer, you owe it to yourself and your clients to use not only the best equipment that you can afford but also equipment that you know that you can trust. This is one such product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Withstands regular professional use Eclipse umbrellas have been part of my portable lighting kit more than 20 years. I've always found them to be durable; this purchase was to replace another Eclipse umbrella that got bent in a fall after years and years of professional use on location. I use them in a portrait set-up, with homemade nylon diffusion panels, creating a beautiful, soft light equivalent to a commercial softbox. This wouldn't be possible without the inner white nylon flat panel that characterizes the Eclipse umbrella. If the umbrella has any flaws, one would be that the plastic cap on the top of the umbrella has a tendency to work loose, and should be checked regularly and tightened. I can't think of any other problems. This is really a great product for amateurs or pros.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Unraveled Price can't be beat, but upon opening the umbrella two white seams were separating, and one of the threads holding one the tips broke. Luckily my wife can sew...If you buy - hopefully you have someone who can sew, as they will continue to need repair, by design. As far as the bounce and shoot through they work fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eclipse 45 Umbrella When it came time to replace my umbrellas, I definitely wanted to upgrade and go large. These Photogenics fit the bill. The rod is solid - not hollow like the cheap ones I used to have. And having the support arms embedded under the fabric was a nice touch to keep any reflections from the chrome from getting back to the subject. And the umbrella itself is designed to focus the light in the direction of your subject - not just send it out in a huge arc. Overall, I was very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great umbrellas I use these for portraits and most recently to take portraits of a high school symphonic band. The strobes were at full power due to the distance and the umbrella provided a very nice, uniform light over the whole band. For portrait work they provide great catch lights, and when used with a diffusion panel, a soft even light. I really like how the spokes are hidden by the inner cover. I would diffidently recommend this product.
