Visual Echoes Better Beamer Overview

The Visual Echoes FX3 Better Beamer Flash Extender will help increase the reach of Canon 580EX, 580 EX II, 600EX-RT, Nikon SB-700 and Metz 54MZ-4 flash units, and increases the flash output by about 2 to 3 f/stops. It focuses and concentrates the output of the flash into a narrow beam via the Fresnel panel that gets positioned in front of the flash. This allows shooting at greater distances and shooting with smaller apertures.

The Better Beamer is designed to be used with lenses 300mm and longer, and its rugged, injection-molded plastic side supports are attached to the flash head by a sturdy elastic "hook-and-loop" band. The rigid supports hold the Fresnel screen in place in both horizontal and vertical formats.

Excellent for wildlife and birding photography, where long-distance fill-flash is often required, especially with a bright sunlight background. The use of fill flash opens up the shadows without the appearance that a flash was used.
When used with TTL flash metering, exposure is automatically set by the camera and flash, and no special compensation is required.
Reduces the drain on battery power by two-thirds.

Perfect for wildlife. It is lightweight and it does not weight down the flash head.

Useful But Over Stated Claims

Generally speaking the Better Beamer functions. It does NOT increase the guide number of your flash by 2-3 stops over the flash manufacturer's claimed values. The increase is, more honestly, stated as it brings the flash output to the manufacturer's claimed GN. Over the years I have measured quite a number of better beamer units on various flashes. The best result thus far was a gain of a single f stop (GN 1.4 X as large as the claimed number for the flash at maximum zoom on the head). On the other hand almost all flash manufacturers GNs are over stated by about 1-2 f numbers (200 claimed, 150 delivered, 165 claimed and 90 delivered) when measured outdoors with no ceilings or reflectors. In that sense it IS useful. Full disclosure here, long, long before Walt began marketing his Better Beamer I made several such devices using up to 14 focal length and 16 diameter Fresnel lenses with 4 side reflection inside the Fresnel holder for my own use. The best optical gain in measured GN was 2.8X (3 f-stops). Generally the Fresnel lens itself scatters almost a full f stop of light from it.... The highest GN gain I have ever measured, as well as the highest GN for a hand held flash unit I have measured was in excess of 560 in feet with a 360 Joule Norman/Lumedyne head. This used the Norman 2H reflector. Is the Better Beamer useful? Yes. Are the marketing claims misleading? Yes. Are the flash unit manufacturers claims inflated? Yes. Bottom line: count on the Better Beamer getting you back up to the claimed specs for the manufacturers flash and you will be happy.

It work on my Nikon SB-700 Speedlite but sometimes Velcro tape is too thick to block the red sensor of flash that do not flash. I will try with different type of tape that fit.

I have always wanted to try a beamer for bird photos. I have done some test so far and this unit really trough's out the light. It easily mounts to my Nikon SB-700 flash head with very good fit. It breaks down well for packing in my camera back pack so its always with me.

question

Will this flash extender work with my Metz 52 AF-1 flash?
Asked by: Anonymous
This flash extender is designed specifically for use with the Canon 580EX, 580 EX II, 600EX-RT, Nikon SB-700, and Metz 54MZ-4 flashes. Unfortunately, it will not be compatible with a Metz 52 AF-1 flash, and there are no Visual Echoes Better Beamer Flash Extenders that are designed for use with this unit.
