What happens when the fabric becomes smudged, dirty, etc? Can you wash this on cold or use a soft sponge to clean it?
Warm water with mild soap and a sponge would be sufficient to clean any smudges etc that you may get on this target.

Would this work with camcorders instead of DSLRs too?
It will work with anything that gives you a histogram. The histogram will let you see the even distribution of pure black, pure white and 18% grey.If your camcorder does not provide a histogram then a pure white-card would be better for you to set the custom white balance with.
