Visual Echoes FX4 overview

  • 1Description

The Visual Echos FX4 Better Beamer Flash Extender will help increase the reach of the flash and increases the flash output by about 2 to 3 f/stops. It focuses and concentrates the output of the flash into a narrow beam via the fresnel screen that gets positioned in front of the flash. This allows shooting at greater distances and shooting with smaller apertures.

The Better Beamer is designed to be used with lenses 300mm and longer. Its rugged injection-molded plastic side supports are attached to the flash head by a sturdy elastic "hook-and-loop" band. The rigid supports hold the Fresnel screen in place in both horizontal and vertical formats. Just weighs 2 1/2 oz.

The FX4 version is designed to custom fit the Nikon SB-800 and SB-600 flash units, without any need for use of additional "shims".

Excellent for wildlife and birding photography, where long-distance fill-flash is often required, especially with a bright sunlight background. The use of fill flash opens up the shadows without the appearance that a flash was used.
When used with TTL flash metering, exposure is automatically set by the camera and flash, and no special compensation is required.
Reduces the drain on battery power by two-thirds.

FX4 Better Beamer for Select Mid-Size Flashes is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 75.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Takes practice but works well. I bought this to use with my Nikkor 70-200mm f.2.8 and TC-17EII teleconverter on a D300s for a recent trip to the far north of Australia. It strapped onto my SB600 easily and is very lightweight and portable. I did find that it takes quite a lot of practice to get the right amount of light to the correct distance. I was mostly taking bird shots. The instructions recommend setting the flash zoom to 50mm and using the modelling flash feature on the camera, both of which helped considerably. When you get it working properly the Better Beamer makes a huge difference to your shots, but you do need to invest time learning how to get the best results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent results I saw the better beamer being used by a pro and asked if it was useful. He told me that he couldn't live without it...he was absolutely right. If you own long lenses, the better beamer will yield superb results! It truly does what it is supposed to do and you will understand how big of a role fill flash plays especially over long distances. The only thing to get in addition to the better beamer is a flash bracket...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really amazed, beyond expectation.. Excellent product, very simple. I tested this item with a Nikon SB900 flash, I lowered the flash output power to 3/4 power and set the zoom on the flash to 50mm. It was tested with a Nikon 300mm lens. I was amazed photographing parked cars a half block away on how well the light carried and filled in the shadows. I also photographed a squirrel & was able to get catch light in the eyes, one shot I got red eye in the squirrel, truly amazing, I ordered another one for the Nikon SB800 flash. I will be using this for birds in flight, it should provide ample light with an external battery pack for quick recycle.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Throw that light This little lightweight kit allows you to really toss your flash across great distances. I was able to project a tiny square of light on an opposite wall in my testing. Amazingly focuses light over long distances. My only qualm is that the securing system is not super stable (mine appeared to be missing one of the little velcro units), but is nevertheless functional and not by any means too wobbly. Could be bolstered with a little of your own personal velcro stash, or you can just be careful not to bump the assembly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More even with flash at 35mm I purchased this extender for when I needed to use my flash (SB-600) with a long lens. While it appears to be on the flimsy side, once mounted on the flash it does work well, being light weight might actually be an advantage. The first thing I did was run some tests, and I discovered two things. One is that it does create a very compact main flash coverage area so it can only give even results with a lens that's 300mm or longer (35mm or full frame digital). The other thing is that it gives the most even coverage (with a 300mm lens) when the flash is set to 35mm. With the flash at 50mm there is some vignetting with a 300mm lens. However, if your subject will be predominantly in the center of the frame setting the flash to 50mm might be fine and would enhance the effective guide number to allow a smaller aperture. I suggest one experiments with this to determin what will work best for your application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inexpensive Way To Improve Photos I shoot Nikon my D300s and sometimes my D700. Both have their benefits, but there are times when the subject you want to capture is in such challenging lighting, that more/longer fill-flash makes the difference between a photo of your subject, or merely getting a silhouette. I use the Better Beamer FX4 on my Nikon Flash when I want to get: A Even lighting of subjects in shade or that are towards the sun/source light. B A little more motion-stopping capability to increase sharpness. (Excellent for small/hyper birds!) C Basic illumination of distant subjects. (Birds in flight or on high branches for example.) The FX4 has increased the appeal and response to my photographs since day-1! My photos are much more vibrant and look sharper than ever before. best of all, subjects under total or partial cover no longer force me to choose between severe overexposing to get them, but blowing-out the rest of the scene, or only getting silhouettes through underexposing the subject, but keeping the rest of the scene. I haven't taken it off of my one Nikon flash yet, so I can't say much for durability/storage. I just use another flash when I don't need the FX4. In truth, I could probably build one of these with parts from craft and hardware stores, but this is an excellent pre-made, and reasonably-priced product. (Buy it when on sale if you want to feel better about not making one yourself!) I highly recommend this product for its: A Ease of use. (REMEMBER TO MANUALLY SET THE FLASH TO 50MM!) B Immediate effect on your photogrpahy with little to no learning curve. C Relatively low cost. (I can't remember ever buying a product that improved my results as dramatically for under $200.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks cheesy, but works! I've been using these flash extenders for over 12 years for shooting night High School football games. Yes, it looks dorky, but the results are great. I can do a whole game on 1/4 power with just the batteries in the flash unit. No need to lug around an external power pack. A little difficult to use at first. Takes a bit of time to adjust the beam since it's so narrow. A lot easier to do with digital. Nightmare back in the film days. Once you have it adjusted, you'll be very pleased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from When you need flash reach...this is it! I am a wildlife photog and I use my flash often. With the addition of this 'FX4 Better Beamer Flash Extender' I can stay out longer and with brighter sun. By using fill flash I can help with possible blown out highlights and get the shot I desire.
