Great tape to have when you don't want to use gaff tape. I definitely try to use these as much as I can especially when you don't want to ruin paint.

Not All Tapes Are Equal

QUICK ANSWER: this tape is matte black paper (masking) tape and is designed to be non-reflective, while having good hold without leaving residue or peeling surfaces. EXPLANATION OF PHOTOS: The tape in the center is the Pro Photo Masking Tape (BH#PEPPMT260B), the small tape on the left is Pro 46 Paper Tape (BH#PEPM46260B), and the large roll on the right is Pro Gaffer Tape (BH#PRGT255B). The photos show the reflectiveness of each tape, what the backings look like, as well as the opacity of each. Note: The third photo was taken while holding the tapes about 8 away from a light bulb. Note: Each carboard core is identical in size which should give some idea of the thickness of each tape. Both paper tapes are 60 yard rolls, while the gaff tape is a 55 yard roll. FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS A BASIC TAPE TUTORIAL: There are pros and cons to every type of tape, just in the same way that you don't use duct tape and scotch tape interchangeably, you wouldn't use gaff and paper tape for the same applications. Please note, that none of these three tapes are meant to be applied to a light! GAFFERS TAPE is known for being incredibly strong (made of fabric), extremely adhesive, and weather resistant, resulting in a durable tape that will not shred like paper but notoriously peels paint off walls, rips the finish off of wooden, and leaves a residue on stands and other surfaces. PAPER TAPE (or masking tape) is less destructive than gaff and is used when gaffers tape is too strong, i.e. on the same walls, wooden floors, etc. However unlike the fabric build/high tensile strength of gaff tape, paper tape may be harder to remove in some instances because it rips easily and may shred when you try to remove it. PHOTO MASKING TAPE, or the Permacel/Shurtape Pro Photo Masking Tape is used for the same reasons you would regular paper tape, but has the huge advantage of being non-reflective. As a result this tape is used only in instances where it would appear in the shot, and where it's cheaper paper tape counterpart would not suffice. WRAP UP: All three tapes are built with different purposes and do their jobs wonderfully! It is common to have all three at a time on any given set, because it's always worth having the right tools for the job.
