Smith-Victor K71 overview

  • 1Description

The Smith-Victor K71 3-Light 2600 Watt Professional Studio Softbox Kit is based around the 720SG and 765UM lights. The kit is rounded out with two 36 x 36" and one 12 x 36" softbox with mounting brackets, aluminum light stands, a boom arm, bulbs, and a wheeled kit case.

Each of the 720SG 1000-watt focusing flood lights has a beam angle that adjusts from 34-40° with the conveniently mounted rear focusing lever. They accept frosted or clear bulbs.

The 765UM is one of Smith Victor's most popular and affordable open face quartz halogen fixtures. This light is suitable for extended duration use, accepts 600- or 250-watt quartz halogen bulbs. An integral umbrella port and universal 3/8" to 5/8" stand mount makes this a perfect light for photo/video portraits, galleries, or store windows.

Although equipped for 120 volt use, this 2600 watt kit is suitable for use with 220-230 AC voltage with the appropriate bulbs and plug adapters, available separately.

Three Softboxes
Heat resistant, one for a main light, one for a fill, one for an edge, or hair light, the softboxes mount easily to the adapter rings provided.
Umbrella
The white umbrella with black backing provides broad, soft light.
Raven Aluminum Stands
Smith Victor's own black light stands are included; they rise to maximum height of 13'.

    Smith-Victor K71 reviews

K71 3-Light 2600 Watt Professional Studio Softbox Kit (120 VAC) is rated 2.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheap After 4 gigs, a glass exploded due to the heat produced by the lamp, a softbox started to melt and a bracket broke. Ho I forgot I had to change 2 bulbs after the first uses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice huge kit Cool kit, big soft boxes, solid stands and boom and a nice soft case with wheels. I think I'll buy more powerful lightbulbs. I use it for photo shoot and short films.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Look elsewhere We've hobbled these lights along for over 2 years. They were sent in for warranty repairs 3 times for internal wiring shorts that caused serious arc discharge in the unit causing brief flames. We could have done without lights blowing up during studio shoots... These have never been used more than an hour at a time, used in an indoor studio about once a week. The worst part is they (SV) tried to blame us for poor wiring insulation and didn't think they should have to repair it. The last time, they discussed it with their engineer who said it needed more wiring insulation. The last fix lasted nearly nine months, which was better. The wiring simply cannot handle the heat produced by the units, even over a short time. The insulation becomes baked and the wiring disintegrates. I have gutted the wiring and started with higher temp wiring and replaced the the in-cord switch (also prone to failure)... problems solved. Wished they could have designed better unit from the beginning. The stands and soft-boxes aren't bad, about average I'd say. Bottom line, don't buy these unless you are willing (and able) to gut them and re-wire yourself, there's better out there for the money.
