A simple filter for protection, the 86mm Clear Uncoated Filter from Tiffen guards the front of your lens from dust, scratches, dirt, moisture, and other elements. As a clear filter, it does not impart any effects onto the image.
This filter is made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves grinding optical glass flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch and then mounting to precision metal rings. The coarse thread version of the filter has a thread pitch of 1.0.

I got this to protect my 300mm f/4 and don't use it. It's more annoying to clean, the annoying type of dust that's just little hairs loves sticking to it. Not gonna deduct more stars for that though, it does exactly what it's supposed to for a pretty good price.
If you want to start a lively conversation in a group of photographers, just ask them if using a protection filter is a good idea. The discussion will become heated and unresolved. Point being, it becomes a personal choice. Because I am an active photographer, my front elements need all the protection they can get. Therefore, I have protection filters on all my lenses. Since my sharpest images make my eyes bleed, I do not find any image degradation using good-quality protection filters like Tiffen's.
