Photographers' Formulary PyroCat-HD Overview

Photographer's Formulary PyroCat HD is a high acutance developer, formulated by Sandy King as an alternative to other pyrogallol-based staining developers.

The advantages over PMK that Mr. King cites for his formula include an approximately 1/3 stop greater effective film speed, 10-15% shorter development times, more consistent staining action, lower toxicity, and no streaking or mottling with reduced agitation.

Catechol (pyrocatechin) has a high vapor pressure and it is a phenol. The high vapor pressure means that solid catechol evaporates readily. When you open a bottle containing solid catechol, you can smell it. Always store solid catechol in a tightly capped glass container. When mixing a solution containing catechol, work in a ventilated area. When catechol is in solution, its high vapor pressure is not a problem.

Ruined film!

Have been using this developer for over a decade, last batch I bought negatives were almost blank- just a faint image in the highlights. Had purchased different boxes for B&H, same results. Never again! B&H was kind enough to refund me the cost of both boxes. Buyer be warned!

Confusing instructions!

The instructions confused the water amounts so it wasn’t clear how to mix the stock solution. Had to throw it away as I wasn’t sure if it was mixed correctly and I wasn’t about to waste a film shoot on something that I didn’t trust. Will never buy this again from PF.

question

Is there a problem shipping this combination of dry-chemicals to Europe?
Asked by: Ole-Henrik H.
While you do not list to which country you wish to send the aforementioned chemicals, I have not found any issues with shipping the Photographers' Formulary Pyrocat HD Film Developer to most countries in Europe. However, I would recommend for you to add the item to your online shopping cart, then selecting your country from the drop-down menu. If it is available for shipment to your country, you can click the Begin Checkout button, enter your shipping address, and select a shipping destination. If it cannot be shipped to your country, once you select your country from the drop-down menu on the My Cart webpage, our website would inform you the item cannot be shipped to your country, and will instruct you to remove the item from your cart in order to proceed with placing your order.

Do I need to tear open each plastic bag and weigh the powder, or can I just add all the powder in the plastic bag?
Asked by: seunghee
You do not need to tear open and weigh each chemical packet individually. For the Photographers' Formulary PyroCat-HD Film Developer (50L kit), the powders are pre-measured in separate plastic bags for Stock Solution A and B.
