Does what it is designed to doJust like ink levels on your printer, you need to pay attention to the ink maintenance tank levels; otherwise you will always be paying for overnight delivery for your replacement tank. Better yet, order a spare and replace it when it gets installed. You cannot run your printer without this unit, and you will not find it at office supply or most neighborhood photo stores. ...

Hidden piece of the printer puzzleThis thing is a plastic frame filled with absorbent pads--it is there to catch stray ink from the inkjet cartridges of the Epson 3880 . The printer status interface lets you know how much capacity is left in the tank and starts suggesting you have a spare on hand at about 8 percent. It is a convenient inconvenience--I'm glad it is there Soaking up stray ink and presumably keeping prints and the paper feed clean, but it is just another piece of the puzzle for keeping this printer with it many cartridges going. I was glad that B&H offers it and the price was reasonable, the best I could find.

Change it before the 3880 LCD indicator says you have to.A word of warning concerning the maintenance cartridge replacement cycle. I had significant black ink flecking. I did the standard troubleshoot. Check heads; clean heads; manually increase platen width to Wider in accordance with my paper width; ensure that no cartridges are badly stale-dated. I'd get one clean print and then it would fleck again and I mean throw a lot of ink. When I did another nozzle check, it showed nozzle issues even after just doing a head clean, which was really odd. The LCD indicator on the printer showed that I had about 25% left to go on the maintenance cartridge. It's so inexpensive and I had a spare, so I thought why not just change it anyway, because the only other step is to take it in for service. When I pulled it out of the printer, it was amazingly heavy with black ink. I replaced it and the flecking disappeared. At a fraction of the price of one ink cartridge, I'm just going to replace it more frequently, probably when the LCD shows about capacity left. I hope this helps other users.

Long Lasting, Simple to MaintainThe Epson Stylus Pro 3880 is my absolute favorite entry level Pro series printer. Amongst many other Pros (and hardly any Cons), the Maintenance Tank / cartidge is also an ink Miser, and extremely easy to replace (when it finally needs replacing after a LONG life). Once you find the port on the front of your printer, Epson's visual instructions (printed on the box) are super easy to follow - Epson even includes a handy disposal bag for your old cartridge.

Don't be caught without itIf you switch between the two blacks often the tank fills up fast. I had to wait for a replacement which meant my printer wouldn't work. Since then I always keep an extra one in the closet.

Don't get caught without oneI didn't know there was any such thing as the ink maintenance cartridge (MC) until I got a warning light and was unable to print. Even though the printer indicated that the MC was nearly full, I was unable to use the printer again until the replacement part arrived a few days later. My old Canon printer had a better system because it was possible to remove the waste ink collector and clean and dry it yourself. The Epson MC contains an electronic chip that can't, to my knowledge, be re-set.

Ink Maintenance TankI've had problems with these, sometimes the printer doesn't see them and other times that they transfer the last tanks life so it's reads full even though you just changed it. Hope this goes smoothly...

Works WellThis does exactly what it is supposed to do, and it lasts an appropriate amount of time for ink maintenance cartridge. Keep a backup on hand.
