At times, when installing a home theater, the limits of cable length can become a problem when distancing and separating components. All cables types suffer from issues of signal degradation, limited maximum length or the exorbitant cost of long cable runs. To address this, Gefen has created the DVI-AUDIO-CAT5 DVI Audio Extender which has the capability to convert and broadcast DVI/HDMI video, TOSlink optical or S/PDIF coaxial digital audio. This signal can be transmitted over two inexpensive and common CAT5 network cables to connect the sender and receiver units over great distances. The signal path is able to maintain complete stereo or multi-channel audio formats (DTS, Dolby Digital, 8.1 etc.) from the source with a maximum range of 150 feet (45.7 m.)
