Leica 12011 Overview

The Leica Universal Wide-Angle Viewfinder M is a shoe-mounted external viewfinder for M-system rangefinder cameras (including M8). This viewfinder offers bright-line frames to match the 16-18-21mm lens. Since the 1.33x conversion factor has to be considered for the M8 digital camera, bright-lines for 21, 24, and 28mm are also included. It can also be used with other fixed lenses that match this range. A parallax compensation dial allows for adjustment of the frame to the focusing distance, in five steps (0.5, 0.7, 1, 2 meter & infinity).

The use of one aspherical lens element and one with achromatic correction in the viewfinder makes it insensitive to stray light, and provides a high resolution and exceptional brilliance image.

An illuminated spirit level helps to keep the camera horizontal even in unfavorable light conditions.
Compatible with the R8/R9 series of diopter correction lenses.

nice with a caveat.

Very convenient on my multi lens M6 setup. Well built and a good fit. I don't like the fact that the frame lines can fade out here and there depending on the incoming light.

a beast, but essential

This thing is huge, but it's also the best external viewfinder I've ever used. It allows parallax calibration based on subject distances as low as 0.5m. I have a variety of wide-angle viewfinders and this one is easily the most accurate.

The best Viewfinder out there

It has the range 16mm, 18mm, 21mm, 24mm, 28mm, because it is designed for the Tri-Elmar super wide of Leica M lens and it has a frameline shifting mechanism that you can flip for different focus distance 0.5m 0.7m 1m 2m, and infinite setting, It has a large physical size, and it is obvious and eye catching which could be a minus for street photography, It is made to be most effective when you shoot in close range, as you can adjust the frame lines to be very close to exact for careful composition, I like the design very much, it was bought to be used with my 21mm f1.4 summilux lens, I feel that it is worth its price however the Quality checking dept of Leica did not do a good job, the illumination plastic piece fell out of its glued position, luckily I was able to catch it bring it out of its packing the very first time !! I had to bring it to Hing Wah (the distribution company and fixing of Leica in Hong Kong) to fix it the very same day I received it, and the fix was to glue it back into place, which I would not attempt to do myself, as the wrong type of glue will fog and ruin it completely This is not the kind of thing you would expect to happen when you paid top dollars for a viewfinder..... so Leica you failed here !! although I love your cameras and lenses !! It is supposed to be new as it was purchased new, but I have some hairline scratches on the bottom of my viewfinder, before I put it onto my camera, after inspecting the possibility of when this could happen, I found out that it was done by removing it from the M-body..... obviously someone played with it on an M-body before me getting it delivered after all it is still a nice piece of accessory to have from Leica, and you will love it once used it for your super wide angle lenses, so I would suggest anyone to try it

Extremely Accurate - Well Engineered

As an external viewfinders go for the Leica M and as a prior owner of the metal 21mm finder, this viewfinder is not as clumsy as it looks, is accurate, and compensates for parallax. Once I have an M10R in hand I'll switch over to the EVF but keep this for my M9P and my film M6 and MP. This viewfinder is all that the previous reviews state. Although this was purchased used from B&H with the Tri-Elmar, it arrived in PERFECT condition. Even used I did not find any hairline scratches of any other marks, wear, or otherwise on the viewfinder or the lens. I expect to learn the viewfinder through exhaustive study and experimentation in order to complete a longstanding book project.- use this with the camera mounted on a tripod.

Very Accurate for a Superwide Finder

Short of using a camera that takes an EVF, this is as good as it gets and I would not want to use anything else with my 18mm f3.8 Super Elmar and M262 body. As accurate with the 18mm as the framelines are on the M262 with the 28-135mm lenses. As a glasses wearer and primarily landscape/travel user, the view is so nice it negates any negative thoughts about the bulkiness of it. 4 stars only because of the price, which I admit is excessive, but no other optical finder comes close to comparing in a positive way.

You can 'guesstimate' 21mm but for 18mm & 16mm, only this finder, EVF or live view will give you an accurate framing.
