Crown Audio CDi-1000 Reviews
The amp is great, but
This was part of a project to replace an aging and failing pool system. I've concluded that outdoor stereos aren't great no matter what you spend, so I decided use 4 cheaper outdoor speakers an old amp and pair them with a Blue Node streamer. It sounded clean but it did not have enough bass, so I added a Martin Logan 100 in ground sub and to drive it I purchased the Crown Cdi 1000 amp. What makes this a 4 star review and not a 5 star review is the fact the output of the Blue Node, nor the stereo out of my Pile 4 channel 4000w amp, would work with the Crown Amp. It turns out that the Crown needs a 0-1.4V professional input signal and the Blue Node and Pile amp only provide a 0-0.5V stereo out. So I purchased a $60 Level Converter, an RCA stereo to Phoenix connector, and a stereo to mono converter. Once connect correctly it rocks. The sub fills in the mid and lows of the cheaper Niles speakers and together it sounds really good for an outside stereo! A simple note on the Crown B&H page indicating that it was not compatible with the Blue Node in my cart would have saved me several days of trial and error. But now I know.
Amazing flexibility
Amazing flexibility. I'm using a single CDI 1000 amp to run a string mono of 70v outdoor speakers AND a massive outdoor 8ohm sub. Plenty of power but the magic is in the DSP chip that allows you to EQ and cross over the amp however you desire. When I first installed, the default internal crossovers were used and then I hooked up a laptop with the free Crown System Architect Software and then--WOW. After every thing was EQ'd and the crossover tweaked it's like listening to live outdoor music which is exaxtly what I was going for. *Note that the amp is designed to use balanced XLR inputs so you will lose 6db with an unbalanced RCA siganl or you can use a Pro Match to convert RCA-->XLR and regain full output*
