DSC Labs Handy Camette Reviews

Good basic greyscale / vector box chart

I got this to use in combination with an X-Rite Colorchecker, shooting both, then isolating each in post for reference. It was a choice between this and the OneShot chart. I wanted the crossed greyscale that isn't on the OneShot, and this was one of the less expensive crossed greyscale with colorbar vectors chart. The Oneshot only has black white and grey for luminence reference, which didn't seem enough for gamma tracking to me. This is one gradation better than that, but definitely cruder than using an 11-step greyscale chart. My first checkout I had too much glare for it to be useful, so on a second test I was able to avoid the glare. I would say it's more prone to glare than I thought it would be, you have to be very careful of that. I may eventually get a OneShot glossy chart to see if I like that better. I don't have a chart capture mode in DaVinci Resolve for this chart, so I've been shooting the Xrite as well for now to have that option. That is one thing the OneShot has going over this chart, Resolve has a chart tool preset for the OneShot. But this is a decent chart for me, I was finally able to produce a .cube LUT for my camera that works better than the manufacturer LUT, so I'm very happy for now with it. The one thing I kind of wish DSC had done was put the top/bottom colors to the side of the greyscale so the waveform would be less cluttered, but maybe if the chart isn't lit as evenly they thought the middle was safer for picking up the same lighting on the colors as the greyscale. It's a small annoyance though for reading the waveform.

A must have

It's rigid construction, and portability are must have for shooting anything inside or outside of the studio. Great for matching camera's, and color correction.
