Sony HVLMT24AM Overview

  • 1Description

The Sony HVL-MT24AM Macro Twin Flash Kit provides TTL metering for close-up flash photography. When working with a macro lens, the effective aperture varies greatly due to the extreme focusing range. The actual aperture of the lens may be several stops smaller than the indicated value, and TTL metering accommodates for this effect without the need for time consuming calculations. This is the ideal system for a macro shooter of moving subjects.

Ratio-variable lighting
Compacts neatly when not in use
Flash heads can be attached at various angles to each other
Seven manual power settings & 3 custom functions:
-Vary time until power-off, or disable entirely
-Use exposure modes other than metered manual for TTL operation
-Change manual power level increments to 0.5 EV
Angle of coverage (twin flashes): 45° vertical, 60° horizontal
When wide panel is mounted: 60° vertical, 78° horizontal
With diffuser (1 flash): 90° vertical, 90° horizontal

    Sony HVLMT24AM Reviews

HVL-MT24AM Macro Twin Flash Kit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good flash, needs to be updated The Sony HVL-MT24AM is based on the old Minolta macro twin flash and still uses the old IISO hot shoe , which Sony no longer uses on any of it's own cameras. Sony also limits this flashes appeal by only supplying 49 and 55 mm adapter rings. There are macro lenses available in A-mount, which use different sizes. Sony might sell more if 72 and 77mm adapters were widely available. The flash itself works very well, with a real deal of flexibility. Like the mini soft boxes! The flash itself works very well, with a great deal of flexibility

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony HVL-MT24AM Macro Twin Flash I have the identical Minolta version of this flash, and it is a very versatile unit. The flash heads can be independently mounted at different locations on the ring and at different distances from the lens using extendable arms. By keeping one flash further from the subject, you can achieve a ratio effect giving the impression of depth for your subject. You can also attach a diffuser panel to each flash head for a softer light. The flash controller will also work with the flash heads of original Minolta Macro Flash 1200AF, 1200AF-N and newer Macro Ring Flash 1200. Expertise: Advanced amateur, 23 years experience Problems Encountered: The rubber caps that cover the sockets on the controller where the flash cords plug into are not attached and care has to be taken not to lose them. With both flashes fully extended, the combination gets a bit unwieldy, but it's still usable in a crowd Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Minolta macro flash 1200AF-N Items I Recommend: Sony/Minolta AF 100mm f/2.8 Macro D lens

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Inadequate Needs to include adapter rings that are difficult to find (72mm, 77mm). Needs a change for the new hot-shoe introduced with A99. Reduce the size of the bulky controler. Remove the cabling, like Nikon R1.

    question

I have a Sony NEX 6 with a Metabones adapter and a Canon EF 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM lens. Can this flash be adapted for use with this configuration? It takes great pictures by the way, but I would like more light.
    Asked by: Henry B.
Sorry, but I returned the flash before ever using it. I decided to switch lenses and then flashes (Sony 90mm macro 2.8 and a Sigma dual point ring flash). Don't have any opinion other than it looked nice and seemed like a good idea!

    question

Is it compatible with the A99 in TTL mode?
    Asked by: Aaron F.
As the Sony HVL-MT24AM Macro Twin Flash uses the older Sony/Minolta Auto-Lock hot shoe, and the Sony Alpha a99 Digital Camera uses the newer Sony Multi-Interface hot shoe, you would need to purchase the Sony Multi-Interface Shoe Adapter, B&H # SOADPMAA, to connect the Sony HVL-MT24AM Macro Twin Flash to the Sony Alpha a99 Digital Camera. Using the Multi-Interface Shoe Adapter, you would retain TTL capability when using the flash on your camera.

    question

Do the individual flash heads use the Minolta-style flash foot like the control unit, or a unique foot that only works with the supplied ring and arms? I ask because if they use the Minolta style foot then the flash heads can be mounted on 3rd party arms (such as those made by Really Right Stuff) using the Sony Multi-Interface Shoe Adapter which would solve the problem of only being able to use lenses with 55mm and 49mm filter threads.
    Asked by: Steven C.
The flash heads use a proprietary foot.
