Voigtlander Bessa-R2M overview

  • 1Description

The Voigtlander Bessa-R2M Rangefinder Camera is a modified version of the Bessa R2A camera. While being identical in all other apsects to the R2A model, the R2M features a mechanical shutter release.  This makes it possible to use the camera even without batteries, albeit without metering.

The Voigtlander Bessa R2A/M is an improved version of the Bessa R2 rangefinder camera, which in itself is an advancment over the original Bessa R camera. All of the original Bessa R's outstanding features are retained; an exceptionally bright viewfinder, quiet shutter & simple LED metering system. Many internal parts of the R2 are made of metal instead of plastic (as on the Bessa R), resulting in a camera which feels more solid and durable in one's hands.

Voigtlander Bessa cameras are light, unobtrusive cameras that are ideal for handheld lowlight conditions. These rangefinder cameras have a smaller distance between the film and the lens mount than SLRs, which makes for inherently sharper lenses.

    Voigtlander Bessa-R2M reviews

Bessa R2M Camera Body (Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect rangefinder camera this camera was my first rangefinder camera. when I developed and printed first roll, I was so happy about the feeling of pictures. And technically It's built so well. I have canon 5d with few L lenses but this is so different.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple, & good -- A rangefinder For those on a budget that would like to experiance and be a part of the decisive moment in the rangefinder world. I recommend this as an introductory camera into the rangefinder community. One can buy good glass for the camera and upgrade cameras in the future if one falls in love with this approach to photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Second body for color I already owned the R4m but bought this one to use as part of a two camera set-up, black and white in one and color in the other. Wish I could have bought another R4m and saved $100 but at some point I plan to add a longer lens than 50mm to my kit and the R4m lacked the necessary frame lines. Otherwise this camera is a joy to use, with the cavet that like all cameras of this kind you better off with an external exposure meter for critical work. With the wide latitude of most 35mm negative films, the internal meter works well enough but I have always preferred the more percise readings a handheld meter allows. As an added bonus, I can use my old Vivitar 283 for automated flash pictures with good results

Rated 3 out of 5 by from To me: not worth it. I had this camera for about two weeks, and shot a few rolls of film with it, and I was very happy with the images. Coupled with the Voigtlander 35mm f1.2 I was getting beautiful, sharp night photos. If all you're looking for is image quality, then the camera body you use won't matter much, as the body doesn't dictate the image quality, the lens and film do. In my opinion, the build quality of this camera is not acceptable. It feels somewhat solid, but almost toy-like. Because of this I find myself babying it, anxious about breaking it's seemingly fragile plastic parts. I have read other reviews that champion this camera as an easy and sensible way into the film rangefinder world, but I don't agree with that. You can get a nice Leica M3 for at least one hundred dollars less than this camera, and that is debatably the best camera of all time. Bottom line: This camera functions as it should, but it's somewhat poor build quality and high price make it not a top choice, at least for me.
