Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

This is an exact replacement for a hood that caught the brunt of a camera drop and split in half. Luckily the camera was fine.

I bought my 50L used and it didn't come with a hood. Even though the hood appears pricy, I don't like using my lenses without hoods so i had no choice but to replace it. I am happy.

The Canon ES-78 Lens Hood doesn't fit EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens. Use the Canon ES-83 Lens Hood for the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens.
