Smith-Victor 700SG Reviews

Great until it explodes or melts

I have had these lights for over a year. The problems started after about 6 months when one of my lights exploded from the side of the bulb. (Scared the poo out of everyone in the house and never really got the session back under control). The heat had been melting/disintegrating the housing, as well. Shortly before, the tabs on top had melted off and the glass will no longer stay on. The other light has also lost the tabs and cannot support the glass any longer. Also, the top lip of the housing became crumbly... as if it had been sitting in the sun for years. This thing gets so hot, I am afraid of it randomly catching fire and burning down the house. I love the excess light... makes life really easy, plus puts out a ton of heat which is great for babies. Unfortunately I am not willing to put their health at risk. The burning plastic smell at the beginning worried me as it lasted long after 2 hours of use (not all at the same time... I did let it cool down after 30 or 45 minutes... again, worried about the excess heat.) I am so disappointed! I have been using SV constant light sources for over 15 years, but these are the worst. I should also mention that on average I use this light less than 2 hours/month. However, the first bulb only lasted about 20 hours, if that. The second bulb is still good.

Not a good kit despite the reviews

I purchased this kit for product videos at work. We're doing 15-30 second videos using our DSLR with HD movie capability. I have a photo shoot room, and this is our first foray in to video. First of all, this kit started smoking, but was much heavier than expected. It could be smelled throughout the entire building. The lights were inconsistent and got extremely hot. Furthermore, the instructions say not to use them for more than 30 minutes at a timewhich I found nowhere in the information. Unfortunately, I can't imagine a time when you would only need 30 minutes of light for a video. So these were packed up and returned for a much more heavy-duty set.

The lights in this kit can be attached directly to the light stand with the built in 5/8 stand adapter or with the use of the Smith Victor UM-4 umbrella mounts if you wanted to use umbrellas with them.

question

do they work with Sony A6000?
Asked by: Anonymous
You can use these lights for stills or video with the Sony A6000. Generally, you would need to set the white balance for tungsten or perform a custom white balance.
