Many items of this type I believe are not designed correctly. The tilting head tilts not only the umbrella shaft but also the flash unit at the same time. The Smith Victor unit lets you tilt the flash unit only so you can center it.

I apologize if this is a stupid question but is there a way to tilt both the flash unit and the umbrella at the same time? I have one of these and I love it but the tilt lever is only letting me tilt the flash which is nice in some cases but most of the time I want to angle the umbrella as well.

We only use this head for a Quantum strobe, typically without an umbrella. I think there is a slot where you can connect your umbrella rod in to the top of the head, but I'm not sure. Sorry I can't be of more help.
