Giottos MH658 overview

  • 1Description

The Giottos MH-658 Quick Release Assembly consists of an Arca-type quick release adapter and a matching camera plate. This system follows the industry-standard Arca Swiss design, and is also compatible with quick release components from other manufacturers (e.g. Arca-Swiss, Foba, Graf/Studioball, Wimberley, etc.).

The sliding camera plate is locked down by turning the side-mounted locking knob. A safety push-button positioned on the side of the adapter adds additional security. A vertical bubble level is incorporated within the locking knob, and a horizontal bubble level is positioned on the base of the adapter. Anti-twist reversible tabs on the plate can be used to prevent slippage when using the head in a vertical position.

A finely machined set compatible with Arca-type components from other brands.
Calibrated quick release plate, with 3/8" & 1/4"-20 camera screws.

    Giottos MH658 reviews

MH-658 Quick Release Assembly is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product I purchased this quick release assembly to replace a Giottos MH-652 quick release assembly and I couldn't be happier. Not only does it give me different options (do to it being an Arca Swiss type mount) but, it also allows me to slide the quick release plate. Which makes panoramic photographs much easier to take. If you purchase the MH-680 L Bracket as an accessory at will give you an even great range of movement in both the vertical and horizontal position. As for being able to attach it to my original ball mount. That was easy just use the allen key (which is provided) to remove the old assembly and attach the new one. It took seconds.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good for what it is. I bought this clamp to attach to the QR plate of a Manfrotto RC-808 head, which I find difficult to use. The MH-658 gives me not only an Arca type QR, but also the ability to balance my camera and lens on the head. The assembly seems well enough made for its price point and suits its intended purpose admirably well. I only rank it 4 stars because of a number of small flaws. First, the release knob is tight. Too tight and feels rough when turned. Second, the mountin screw binds in the clamp body before seating in the counterbore, which required a small amount of filing for a good snug fit. Finally, the safety release button mechanism is loose and tends to push out the side plug after any amount of use. Granted, that these minor flaws are specific to my assembly or perhaps a reflection on Giottos QC I have no idea. I do know that my older MH-657 is superior in all respects. In summary, I would recommend this as a reasonably priced QR assembly but if you are picky about your equipment, as I am, hope you get a better one. Ultimately, you do get what you pay for and it becomes a matter of cost vs. benefit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2 Thumbs up! ...What I did was create a very stable quick release head (arca-type) that more than covered my needs. What I used, was a 30nM Cullman head which supports 44lbs (30nM) in conjunction with the Giottos MH-658 Quick Release Assembly. The Giottos plate that was included I am using on my 70-200 f2.8 Tamaron with an occasional Tamaron 2x tele-converter mounted to my XSi (soon to be 7d I hope). I purchased another Giottos plate for mounting to the camera body for other lens. I tried the Acratech plate to begin with, but a really nice feature the Giottos has is the safety catch release.Another feature I like so far is the flip up anti-rotation tabs on the plates. Works well and is simple to operate. I used the video button on the long lens in lieu of these tabs just because it seemed to work better in that situation. What I ended up with was a Arca type system on a very stable head for around $200 with the additional plate. I have mounted this to ...'s flashpoint F-1228 for a tripod setup less than 400. ...So far this setup is supporting my needs very well and I am thrilled with my purchase. For the money its a great setup for a photo-enthusiast like myself!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nothing more to ask for that price I use it with light gears(D60, Tamron 17-50 2.8, sometime with SB-600). But is work all right. I try to tight it in different angle. and press on the end of the lens. It still can hold still. I believe it can manage heavier DX body and bigger lens(may be not too big). Price is all right. BTW, I also get a long quick release plate for more flexibility. It work great with it. But I suspect it wouldn't hold up a big long lens. But I don't have that kind of lens to try anyway.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Made & Designed Plate I have been happy with Giottos products. They are well made, well designed and priced competitively. This assembly & plate are no different. It does the job functionally and the plate itself has the ability to mount both SLR & Video Cameras. The level on the Release knob is also handy. I use the Release Assembly on my Giottos MH 3300 Ballhead, which is great. No cons to mention.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just like others said, It is good It is good like others said. The anti-slippery lock is a nice touch. And the red little stud is also good. Price is all right. Construction is not so bad as some others said. The only thing I don't like is the turning knob is too close to the camera bottom. That is why I rate it four star. And I take a 6cm plate to use with it for more flexibility. It cost some more. But worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Item I purchased a second of these to add it to another tripod. I am surprised about the quality for the price. This unit is far lower in cost than other Arca-Type mechanisms and far higher in value. Really, I couldn't say enough good things about this hardware.
