AKG C520 Overview

The AKG C520 is a cardioid, condenser head-worn microphone with a comfortable, adjustable band that is designed to wrap around the neck. The lightweight design not only allows for comfortable long-term use, it keeps the microphone hidden from view, making it a suitable choice for performances, theater and more.

The cardioid polar pattern eliminates off-axis noise and feedback while the wide frequency response and sensitive capsule result in smooth, accurate vocal reproduction. The C520 features an adjustable gooseneck and the cable terminates to a standard XLR connection. The microphone is powered with 9 to 52 volts phantom power. The C520 is an ideal choice for presentations, performances, narration and more.

AKG C520 Reviews

C520 vs. CM311 amateur review

I think C520 is the greatest microphone in the world for voice/speech recording. CM311 might be good for stage, where very high levels of noise present, including from the stage speakers/monitors. Who knows; in my room with cat and air conditioner as main sources of noise all fidelity of my voice is lost. I hear myself but it's not me. With C520, on the other hand, I hear myself and I like what I hear; it's me, also, perhaps, a better version of me, more genuine, more smooth as I have to put much less energy into my voice and still hear my excellent voice. I think it's perfect for podcast, video blogs and alike. For some reason big, heavy, stationary mics are used for it. But you have to move your head, so all quality, even if present - is easily lost. C520 is head-worn, lightweight. Therefore I believe quality of my voice recordings is surpasses and expensive, "desk-attached" mics. When making comparisons, the same piece of equipment was used: RME Babyface Pro. Which is as good as it gets for studio quality recordings and not only.

Couldn't recommend more.

Use this for our announcer at all athletic events. Excellent quality and sound. Stays put with plenty of cord length to move around freely.

A good mike for drummers or anyone looking for freedom from a mike stand. I'm a drummer, so wireless is not a consideration. I used the Shure SM10A and found it was uncomfortable and not easy to adjust. The Crown 311A was OK, but I like the fit better with the AKG

Wonderful sound quality & selectivity - weak spot in wiring

I have now owned four of these microphones. They last a little less than a year under my use scenario. They have wonderful audio quality while they work. They exclude room sound very well and so I continue to purchase them. However, I change the windscreen on the microphone about 6 to 10 times a day for sanitation as I record different people with the headset. All headsets have failed in the same location. The insulation on one internal micro-wire rubs off within the flexible link between mic and the side support and the microphone shorts out. The photos show my previous three microphones. I finally cut the flexible rubber to find the problem. When I separate the two wires, the microphone functions again. If both wires were insulated or the insulation was more robust/thicker, the microphones would be more durable.

Easy to wear, very light. Works best when located 4cm - 7cm distance from the mouth. Works fine with regular phantom power. Excellent mic for voice/acoustic analysis/research.
