Audio-Technica AT8539 Overview

The Audio-Technica AT8539 is a power supply that can be used with any Audio-Technica wireless microphone to operate as a wired microphone. The power supply features an HRS-type 4-pin input connector on one end and a standard 3-pin XLR output connector for direct connection to a standard microphone input on the other.

In addition, the AT8539 offers a low-cut filter to help minimize the pickup of unwanted low frequencies. The power module is constructed of rugged steel for maximum durability and optimum shielding from hum. A snap-on belt clip is included.

Works perfectly, but the price seems high

This adapter worked perfectly to convert my wireless AT lav mic to a wired configuration. I am using it with a Zoom H4n. The device requires 48V phantom power on the XLR side, so be sure that is enabled on the device you are connecting it to. The audio-technical folks told me You will need to send phantom power to the microphone through the AT8539 and that can come from either a recording device such as a mixer or an external phantom power supply, such as the AT8801. The only downsides to this device are its price (seems too high for what it does), and it's weight, which can make it awkward to deal with in some situations. But it works, and that's what's important.

This is a fantastic way to get either wireless or wired options using the same lavaliere microphone without having to purchase multiples, which would be far more expensive. I already owned a dual-channel wireless transmitter and a couple of AT-899 omnis, but their connectors are not XLR and their phantom power levels too feeble for use as wired mics. Using this adapter, the AT-899 can be plugged right into an XLR with phantom and used wired, which is great.

How is this powered may I ask please? Does this convert a mic terminated with a 4 pin to work with XLR? Will I need to phantom power afterwards?

Yes it converts the Audio Techica style 4 pin to an xlr. Phantom power is required for the AT over ear mics and lavs.If you do not have a board that is supplying phantom you can use the sampson S-Phantom box to put the power source in line...good luck!
