How does the slide brake operate?
It is spring loaded, so normally a small metal plate pushes up against the wheels. To release the brake, you pull down on the square wire loop, which pulls the metal plate away from the wheels, allowing the carriage to move freely. Note: you can still move the carriage without releasing the brake. The brake only applies enough friction to keep the carriage from moving freely.
