Panasonic DMC-FX100 Overview

Providing the outstanding performance of a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit wide-angle lens and a 12.2-megapixel CCD in a sleek body, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100 Digital Camera is an impressively styled and elegantly finished compact camera that can be relied upon to capture your most special moments.

The DMC-FX100 incorporates a 1/1.72-inch large CCD with 12.2-megapixel rich recording resolution. This super-high resolution means the FX100 captures the nuances of subjects such as delicate flower petals, subtle skin textures, or the complex hues of sunset with breathtaking clarity and detail. The 12.2-megapixel resolution also allows images to be printed up to poster sizes with spectacular results. Similarly, the high resolution lets you trim an image - framing only the part you like - and then magnify it and still get outstanding detail and resolution.

The DMC-FX100 is also equiped with a 3.6x wide angle f/2.8 Leica DC Vario-Elmarit Lens (equivalent to 28mm - 100mm on a 35mm film camera), that also features an Intelligent Image Stabilizer based on Panasonics renowned MEGA O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer) and including Intelligent ISO control. This impressive lens unit comprises seven elements in six groups, including an EA (extra-high refractive index aspherical) lens and four lenses with five aspherical surfaces to generate high optical performance. Furthermore, the zoom ratio can be extended up to 7x in 3-megapixel resolution mode with minimal deterioration thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom. The FX100 also has an Easy Zoom feature that, at the touch of a button, shifts the lens instantly to full 3.6x zoom power. A second touch of the button activates the Extra Optical Zoom function and extends zoom all the way to 7x.

The Venus Engine III is Panasonic's advanced image-processing engine that supports a super-fast response time such as an an impressively quick 0.009 second shutter release time, and a shutter interval as short as 0.9 seconds - outstanding for a camera recording at 12.2-megapixel resolution. Additionally, the burst shooting mode boosts the capability of sequential shots to a rate of 2 frames per second at full resolution, or a High-Speed Burst shooting mode that can capture images at an incredible eight shots per second. If this wasn't enough, you also get unlimited consecutive shooting - which allows you to take photos in succession up to the capacity of the memory card or built in memory. Furthermore, the FX100 includes a high quality video mode that can record stunning wide aspect VGA (640 x 480) and WVGA (848 x 480) motion images at 30 frames per second, or wide-aspect HD (1280 x 720) motion images at 15 frames per second. This enables you to view them on a widescreen HDTV television perfectly.

12.2 Megapixel CCD
A large 1/1.72" CCD with an effective 12.2 megapixels of resolution means that you'll be able to produce high resolution images that can yield photo quality 30 x 40" prints. The camera also has resolution options that are available in three different aspect ratios - 16:9 for displaying on a wide screen monitor or TV, 3:2 for making standard photo album prints, and 4:3 for more traditional image dimensions common in picture frames.
Bright Wide-Angle Leica Lens
An advanced 28mm wide-angle, 3.6 optical zoom Leica DC Vario-Elmarit Lens system featuring four aspherical lenses (including an EA lens) with five aspherical surfaces. Developed specifically for the DMC-FX100, this lens gives users the creative power to capture stunningly true-to-life high-resolution images with extraordinary resolution, detail and clarity. The 28mm wide-angle lens opens up a plethora of photographic opportunities, allowing photographers to easily capture a large group of people, or expansive architectural structures and landscapes with dynamic width and rich perspective. The wide-angle lens is particularly helpful in situations where you cannot step back or move away from a subject - ideal for shooting group portraits in a small room for example.
Reduce Blur with MEGA OIS and Intelligent ISO
Image blur is commonly caused by either movement of the camera or movement of the subject. Camera movement is corrected with the MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) feature which uses built-in gyro-sensors to detect the smallest camera movement and instantaneously shifts a lens element in the opposite direction to compensate, giving you sharp, clear images without deterioration. Motion blur - caused when a subject moves as the shot is being taken - is minimized with Intelligent ISO Control. This system actually detects whether the subject is moving and automatically adjusts the ISO setting and shutter speed to minimize the motion blur effect while maintaining good exposure.
Extended Optical Zoom & Easy Zoom
The Extended Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with the use of digital zoom, provides an additional 7.0x zooming power in addition to the 3x standard optical zoom (available with 3 megapixel or smaller images only). And zooming is super easy - just press the Easy Zoom button and the FX100 jumps instantly from 1x to 3.6x to 7.0x.
Super-Fast Shutter Response and Consecutive Shooting
The DMC-FX100 is fast and responsive - thanks to the Venus Engine III processor. The camera has an extremely fast shutter lag, so you won't miss that "perfect" moment, and it enables high ISO to minimize motion blur and take pictures under low lighting without the need for a mood-killing flash. Furthermore, the advanced processor enables fast, and unlimited continuous shooting at a rate of up to 8 frames per second - a superbly useful feature when shooting sports or other fast paced events.
Record High Quality Moving Images
Record beautiful full-size movies in 16:9 Wide VGA format (848 x 480) at 30 fps or 10 fps with enhanced picture quality and brightness. If this wasn't enough, the FX100 can also record stunning wide-aspect HD (1280 x 720) motion images at 15 frames per second. This enables you to view them on a widescreen HDTV television perfectly, and it can also shoot standard VGA (640 x 480) and QVGA resolution for home use or e-mail/web applications.
Easy-to-use Scene Modes
The DMC-FX100 has 20 scene modes to provide the best overall image quality for common shooting situations, such as Portrait, Sports, Scenery, Night Scenery, and more, including the enhanced High-Sensitivity mode (ISO 6400 with flash). It is easy to select the best scene mode thanks to the Scene Mode list display and help screen, which shows the description of each mode on the LCD monitor.
Auto Angle Detection
Auto angle detection records whether an image was taken horizontally or vertically. This ensures that when playing back on the LCD monitor or displaying images on your TV by connecting your Lumix Digital Camera with an A/V cable, vertical images are automatically displayed vertically and horizontal images are automatically displayed horizontally.
Built-in and Expandable Memory
The camera includes 27MB of built-in memory, and the memory capacity can be expanded dramatically with Secure digital (SD) or Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards. You can also copy images from a memory card or PC to the built-in memory, and view them on the LCD anytime you like.
2.5" High-Resolution LCD Display
The DMC-FX100 features a 2.5" high-resolution LCD monitor which is surprisingly large for such a compact camera. This high-quality display makes it easy to see your subject, and when shooting outdoors on a sunny day, the Power LCD button can boost the backlighting by about 40% for even easier visibility. The High Angle Mode improves viewability from a low angle, such as when shooting over a crowd, and the display also provides many shooting assist features such as guide lines for better image framing and a histogram function to check exposure on the fly.
Extended Battery Life
Incorporating the latest lithium-ion battery and the Venus Engine processor that consumes less power than previous processors, the FX100 provides impressive battery life so you can take approximately 320 pictures on a charge.
Category Playback Feature
The unique Category Playback feature of the DMC-FX100 sorts images into categories such as portraits, landscapes, nightscapes and events, then lets users view images in only the selected categories.
Bundled Photo Editing Software
In addition to the ArcSoft PhotoImpression, PanoramaMaker, and PhotoBase, The DMC-FX100 includes the Lumix Simple Viewer for beginners to store, playback, print or E-mail images via the PC. Images will be automatically transferred just by inserting the SD Memory Card into a card reader or by connecting the camera to PC; and the images will also be sorted by the date of shooting to streamline the process of organizing the pictures as much as possible.
Direct Printing Capability
Simply connect the DMC-FX100 to a PictBridge compatible printer with the included USB cable, engage the direct print feature, and print directly - without the need for a computer The direct print feature allows you to select all images or just the images you like best, and even make multiple copies to share with family and friends
